“Exotic” is the theme for this weekend. DART can take you to the Deep South, Ancient China, Arabia or Spain. Wherever you go, DART is your ride. Check out these DARTable excursions.

Thursday, Jan. 9

The Color Purple opened Tuesday and only runs through Sunday, so now’s your chance to see it. This reimagined version of the Broadway favorite – which is itself a reimagining of Alice Walker’s classic novel – is a goldmine of gospel, jazz, and blues music. Take a trip to the Deep South for an exhilarating tale of triumph at the Winspear Opera House. That’s about a 6-minute walk from Pearl/Arts District Station on all four DART Rail lines.

Friday, Jan. 10

Scheherazade sweeps you away to the world of Arabian Nights. The 1888 work by Rimsky-Korsakov is full of exotic violin melodies and rousing, brassy fanfares. Additionally, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra will premiere a work by Julia Wolfe, the DSO’s composer-in-residence. There are other treats on the program, too; it runs through Sunday at the Meyerson Symphony Center, about a 6-minute walk from Pearl/Arts District Station.

Saturday, Jan. 11

Shen Yun opens tonight at Richardson’s Eisemann Center for a three-performance, two-day run.  The dance program transports you to ancient China. There’s breathtaking choreography, plus vivid costumes and a live orchestra. The venue is right across the plaza from Galatyn Park Station on the Red Line.

Morgan Wallen comes to Irving tonight with a guitar case full of country hits: “The Way I Talk,” “Up Down” and “Whiskey Glasses,” to name a few. The Tennessee troubadour plays at the Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory, about a 9-minute walk from Irving Convention Center Station on the Orange Line.

Sunday, Jan. 12

El Greco, Goya and a Taste for Spain: Highlights from the Bowes Museum presents 11 works that John and Josephine Bowes acquired in 1863. The British art-collecting couple had a special feeling for Spanish works. The exhibition closes after today. It includes archival materials, such as the Bowes’ annotated catalogue of their purchases. See the exhibition at the Meadows Museum on the SMU campus. Take the Red, Blue or Orange lines to SMU/Mockingbird Station, then catch the Museum Express (Route 743). Bus Route 521 will put you within a couple blocks’ walking distance.
