2013 DART Food Fight benefits Union Gospel Mission

It was a food fight of different sorts during the month of December. Every year, departments at DART compete in a food drive to benefit the Union Gospel Mission in Dallas. This year, the more than 3,000 employees donated a total of 98,848.51 pounds of food and $6,017 to the organization, which provides food, beds, shelter and clothing to the homeless men, women and children. Since the food drive began 16 years ago, more than 400,000 pounds of food has been collected for the charity. That amount is roughly equal to the weight of three DART super-light-rail vehicles or nine of DART's new CNG buses. The campaign also has raised nearly $56,000 in cash through the years. DART President and Executive Director Gary Thomas presented the cash contributions and pallets of food to representatives from the Union Gospel Mission at a ceremony on Dec. 18 at DART Headquarters.
