The stars are out this weekend: concerts under the stars, sports stars in the flesh and a reimagined version of “The Starry Night” made of LEGO bricks. These are some of the DARTable experiences happening in North Texas, and they’re only a start. Read on to find out more. 

Friday, July 12

SportsCon is a one-of-a-kind interactive sports convention that puts you face-to-face with your favorite pro athletes - more than 150 of them in all, from every major sport. This DARTable expo(think ComicCon for sports fans) starts today and runs all weekend long in the Automobile Building at Fair Park – a short walk from the Green Line’s Fair Park Station. 

Sounds of Summer Concert Series is a free event in Downtown Garland, and tonight is the last concert of the season. Latin music couldn’t be more fitting for a warm summer’s evening, and Havana NRG is bringin’ it with a full-on horn section and Cuban roots. The band has been together 16 years, so you know they’re tight. They take the stage at 7 p.m. There will be vendors and food, and the evening will be capped off with a fireworks display. Take the Blue Line to Downtown Garland Station and follow the sounds of rumba, mambo and chachachá to get to the fun.

Klyde Warren Park's Summer Movie Series is a laid-back way to take in a free movie under the stars, with the spectacular Dallas skyline as a backdrop. Tonight’s film is a family favorite: The Little Mermaid, Disney’s crowd-pleasing take on the classic fairy tale. The screening begins about 8:30 p.m. Of course, it wouldn’t be Klyde Warren Park without food trucks, and there should be enough options to suit everyone in your party. You can get there by walking 8 or 9 minutes from St. Paul Station. Or the M-Line Trolley will drop you off right at the park. 

The Urban Flea is Garland's market of stylish vintage finds and re-purposed goods. Dozens of vendors showcase unique antiques and handmade items in the city's charming downtown, a neighborhood full of mom-and-pop shops and restaurants. Live music completes the experience a short walk from the Blue Line’s Downtown Garland Station.

The Art of the Brick is the latest of the Perot Museum of Nature and Science’s always-cool exhibitions. The traveling show features works of art constructed entirely of LEGOs. It’s the largest display of its kind, with both original pieces and LEGO versions of famous masterpieces, such as "Starry Night." It being the Perot Museum, there are also lots of hands-on experiences to engage with. Get there by walking about five (short) blocks north from West End Station.  After you cross under the bridge, the museum is a few hundred feet to your right. The exhibition runs through Aug. 18. #YourRideThisWeekend

DART is making major improvements. To create a smoother ride through downtown Dallas and reduce service interruptions, track improvements are under way and will continue until September. During that time, DART Rail in Downtown Dallas will be discontinued each weekend between Pearl/Arts District and West End stations. Bus bridges will be in operation. DART.org/plus
