Just earlier this year, population rates released by the U.S. Census “show the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington region had the nation's largest numeric growth, gaining 131,767 people last year.” And it’s not slowing down anytime soon. Our region’s population is expected to climb by 50 percent by 2045.

While all this growth is good for the economy, without a strong transit infrastructure in place, it can quickly lead to congested roads, increased pollution, and longer, more frustrating commutes for locals. That’s what make DART’s multi-modal approach to public transit—including buses, light rail, streetcars, on-demand services, and regional rail—so critical.

Meeting the Needs of a Growing Region
With North Texas continuing to grow quickly, keeping up with this growth is a real challenge—one that DART is tackling head-on. DART not only helps connect people to the places they need to go, but our various transit options help alleviate the burdens that can come with population growth, while ensuring we can continue to grow in a smart, sustainable way.

That’s why we continue to invest in new projects, improvements, and additions to help ensure our system can handle the increased population growth our region is experiencing now and will continue to experience well into the future. This includes:

• D2 Subway – With planning underway, the D2 Subway will help ensure the DART system is able to support the additional population of our region, especially when it comes to navigating the downtown region. Once complete, it will increase capacity, improve system reliability, and enhance the rider experience.
• Cotton Belt “Silver Line” – The upcoming Silver Line will run 26 miles and include 10 new stops, connecting seven different cities along the way from DFW Airport to Plano.
• Dallas Streetcar – The Dallas Streetcar Central Link is a proposed streetcar project connecting from the Convention Center area through the central core of Downtown Dallas, linking the current Dallas Streetcar system to the M-Line trolley near Uptown and Klyde Warren Park.
• Platform Extensions – With the influx of new residents and riders, crowding on the DART Red and Blue lines could become more of a problem, which is why we’re working to modify the platforms at 28 stations in order to enable them to accommodate three-car light rail vehicles. That will help improve access, increase capacity, and ensure a more pleasant experience for everyone.
