Fresh pop-up farmers market along Dallas public transit in October
The American Heart Association increases nutrition access at DART bus station; weekly pop-up markets offer nutrition education, opportunities to sign up for SNAP, and locally grown produce from Restorative Farms
Dallas residents riding the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) bus system this month will have convenient nutrition thanks to weekly pop-up farmers markets in October. The American Heart Association is enhancing nutrition security efforts in Dallas by ensuring access to healthier foods.
The diets of most people living in the United States do not align with the healthy dietary pattern identified in nutrition research as most likely to prevent chronic diet-related disease, and only 1 in 10 adults meets the US Dietary Guidelines recommendations for fruits and vegetables.
Food accessibility, availability, and affordability make it harder for these historically under-resourced communities to access nutritious foods that help prevent chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and Type 2 diabetes.
In collaboration with DART and Restorative Farms, the American Heart Association will be sponsoring Produce Pop-Up Markets every Wednesday in the month of October at the DART Akard Station. Access to nutritious foods is essential to having a healthy heart, and these pop-up markets will allow any individual passing through Akard station to access fresh, locally grown produce.
Along with the produce at these pop-up markets will be opportunities to sign up for SNAP along with nutrition education. The American Heart Association is grateful to the Moody Foundation, NCR Voyix, and the Truist Foundation for supporting this initiative. The pop-up markets will be held every Wednesday from 4:00p-6:00p at Akard Station and is open to everyone.
