As we look back on DART's 40-year history, we celebrate both our early years and our more recent accomplishments.
In June 1984, DART began crosstown bus service between Irving and Garland. In September 1985, Suburban cities received connecting bus service with the first phase of the suburban local bus network. New routes were added in Garland and other cities. The agency introduced the DART About suburban mobility van service in several cities, including Garland, in January 1989. The agency broke ground on South Garland Transit Center in October 1992 and opened the transit center for operations in May 1993. That same year, DART broke ground on Lake Ray Hubbard Transit Center. Light rail construction began in Garland on January 7, 1999. On November 18, 2002, DART opened the northeast corridor Blue Line extension as far as Downtown Garland Station, bringing the total light rail system to 41 miles at that time.
The city now boasts two light rail stations – Downtown Garland Station and Forest/Jupiter Station – and two transit centers providing bus connections: South Garland Transit Center and Lake Ray Hubbard Transit Center. In addition, DART offers on-demand service in the Southeast Garland GoLink zone.
