Question:
When I board a DART bus, do I need to board at the rear door?

Answer:
Beginning in March, DART asked riders to board at the rear door of our larger buses if they were physically able to do so. Rear-door boarding has helped to limit contact between operators and riders and has helped prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

However, effective July 3, 2020, DART now allows front door boarding on all buses due to Governor Abbott’s face mask mandate. Additionally, DART has installed respiratory droplet shields around the bus operator area on all buses. The new shields are attached to the operator barrier door and extend the door’s clear plexiglass shield towards the windshield and upward towards the ceiling.

DART Engineering, in collaboration with the Fleet Maintenance and Bus Operations teams, designed the high-impact plexiglass shields. The shields are an added precaution beyond enhanced cleaning procedures on buses and trains that helps protect passengers and bus operators. These safety measures are designed to protect operators who provide the essential transportation services that serve as a lifeline for communities and residents across the DART Service Area.

Customers are encouraged to use one of DART’s contactless fare payment options – GoPass or the GoPass Tap card – instead of paying cash at the fare box to reduce contact with bus surfaces.
