Celebrate 2024 Juneteenth at Events in the DART Service Area

Juneteenth Juneteenth
Posted on Jun 14, 2024 by DART Daily

North Texas comes together on Wednesday, June 19th, to commemorate the historic announcement and assurance of the liberation of enslaved people made in Galveston, Texas, right here in our own state. When federal troops arrived to deliver the news, two and a half full years had already passed since President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation to free slaves in Confederate states during the American Civil War.

Thanks to individuals like Opal Lee, a civil rights activist and retired teacher known as “The Mother of Juneteenth,” Juneteenth became a federal holiday. She has lived most of her life in Fort Worth and has been celebrating Juneteenth since she was a young girl. In 2021, at 94 years old, Lee's initiatives and steadfast actions finally succeeded when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.

DART gets you to a few celebration events! Read on to find out more.
