DART Prepares for Extreme Cold Weather Across North Texas

With temperatures expected to drop below freezing, DART and several North Texas cities are doing their part to keep North Texans warm.

Friday, Dec. 23-Saturday, Dec. 24, DART will keep its transit centers open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. to help keep riders warm while traveling on DART. Staff will be on hand to assist riders with travel planning.

Transit center locations include:

  • Addison: Addison Transit Center
  • Cockrell Hill: Cockrell Hill Transfer Location
  • Dallas: Central Business District East Transfer Center, CBD West Transfer Center, Illinois Station JB Jackson/MLK Jr Station, Ledbetter Station
  • Garland: Downtown Garland Station, South Garland Transit Center
  • Irving: Downtown Irving/Heritage Crossing Station
  • Plano: Parker Road Station

The city of Dallas is offering four temporary inclement weather shelters:

  • Austin Street Shelter Annex - 2929 Hickory St, Dallas, TX 75226
  • J. Erik Jonsson Central Library - 1515 Young St, Dallas, TX 75201
  • Oak Lawn United Methodist Church - 3014 Oak Lawn Ave, Dallas, TX 75219
  • Warren United Methodist Church - 3028 S Malcolm X Blvd, Dallas, TX 75215

The city will also deploy Street Outreach teams to distribute warming supplies to those who choose not to seek shelter. The cold weather packets include a hat, gloves, a mylar blanket, and hand and foot warmers. Individual cold weather packets may also be picked up at the following recreations centers across the city:

  • Exall, 1355 Adair St.
  • Fretz, 6994 Beltline Road
  • Harry Stone, 2403 Millmar Drive
  • Jaycee-Zaragoza, 3114, Clymer St.
  • Kidd Springs, 711 W. Canty St.
  • Kiest, 3080 S. Hampton Road
  • Lake Highlands, 9940 White Rock Trail
  • Marcus,3003 Northaven Road
  • MLK Center. 2922 M.L. King Blvd.
  • Pleasant Oaks, 8701 Greenmound Ave.
  • Samuell-Grand, 6200 E Grand
  • Singing Hills, 6805 Patrol Way
  • Thurgood Marshall, 5150 Mark Trail
  • Timberglen, 3810 Timberglen Road

A volunteer group in Garland known as GLOW has mobilized to provide a warming shelter at Axe Methodist Church, located at 1700 W. Kingsley Road in Garland. The shelter will open at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and close at 7 a.m. Friday. It will reopen at 5:30 p.m. Friday and close at 7 a.m. Saturday.

Plano’s overnight warming station (P.O.W.S) will open Thursday, Dec. 21 and remain open through Monday. The P.O.W.S. provides a warm, safe place for people who would otherwise be outside on freezing nights. If someone needs shelter, they can call the P.O.W.S. at 214-988-9434. The warming station is located at The Salvation Army-Plano at 3528 E. 14th Street.
