The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection 

The Harlem Renaissance gave us some of America’s most memorable artists, writers and scholars. The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection celebrates them with fine art and historical objects, many newly acquired.  It’s a fascinating glimpse into the past at the ArtCentre of Plano, a short stroll across Haggard Park from Downtown Plano Station on the Red Line.

Summer Series

If you’re in the mood for outdoor entertainment, put on your blue suede shoes (or sandals) and head to Addison, where the Summer Series is nearing the end of its season. Tonight, Kraig Parker rocks the circle with his right-on-the-money Elvis tribute. Pay your respects to the King and get special offers from surrounding restaurants at Beckert Park, just off Addison Circle – less than a third of a mile from Addison Transit Center. Numerous bus routes will get you there.

Concert on the Square 

Can’t get enough of grooving under the stars? Carrollton’s Concert on the Square presents the classic rock sounds of RAW Acoustic, along with tasty treats and other fun stuff on the charming town square. Grab a lawn chair or blanket and head to the Green Line’s Downtown Carrollton Station. The square is only a short walk away.

Movies in the Park

And in Haggard Park, right next to Downtown Plano Station, you can enjoy free, family-friendly Movies in the Park, plus food trucks and the chance to win prizes. Tonight it’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” the science fiction/fantasy classic.

Texas Summer Jam with Randy Rogers & Friends

Fans of homegrown country music won’t want to miss the Texas Summer Jam with Randy Rogers & Friends at The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory. Expect to scoot your boots to hits like “One More Sad Song” and “Too Late for Goodbye,” along with the twangy sounds of Parker McCollum, Mike Ryan and several more. The venue is a short walk from Irving Convention Center Station on the Orange Line.

 Today is a great day for theater, with a pair of popular offerings enjoying their final performances.

Hand to God

Hand to God is a Broadway hit that’s been taking the country by storm. Written by Texan Robert Askins, the play takes place in a church basement, where a young man’s foul-mouthed hand puppet exposes hypocrisy with a barbed wit. WaterTower Theatre presents this adult dark comedy at the Addison Conference & Theatre Centre. Walk from Addison Transit Center to Addison Circle and take a left; the facility will be on your right shortly, about four-tenths of a mile walk total.

School of Rock

For some goofier, lighter humor, it’s your last chance to check out School of Rock, presented by Dallas Summer Musicals at the Music Hall at Fair Park. Based on the hit movie, the fun musical follows a wannabe rock star who turns a class of goody-two-shoes students into a guitar-shredding rock band. In addition to the music from the film, the play features new material by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The venue is a few hundred feet from the Green Line’s Fair Park Station.
