Both Friday and Saturday, you can catch Poets 'n Jazz #5 at The Black Academy of Arts and Letters. Spoken-word artists Zemill and Verb Kulture take the mic to transport the audience with their poetry, combined with some great jazz. The performances take place in the Clarence Muse Cafe Theatre, near Convention Center Station.

The classic musical Gypsy is in the second night of its run, which extends until June 17. Telling the story of Rose, a gregarious stage mom determined to get her two daughters into show business, the musical features numerous standards: "Some People," "Let Me Entertain You," "Rose's Turn," the show-stopping "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and more. This great night of theater is at The Firehouse Theatre, a short walk from Farmers Branch Station.

Saturday, June 2

You could make a whole day of it in Garland’s historic downtown square today. First, there’s The Marketplace Garland, featuring fresh produce, baked goods, jellies and other culinary delights, along with unique items from local artisans and craftsmen.

Later in the afternoon, the Sounds of Summer Concert Series kicks off with high-quality craft and food vendors lining the square. The fun continues throughout the evening with live music from Me and My Monkey, a Beatles tribute band guaranteed to raise a smile. There will even be fireworks at sundown. Both events take place right on the square, near Downtown Garland Station.

Over in Las Colinas, classic heavy metal rules when Poison takes the stage at The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory. Take a stroll from Irving Convention Center Station, and get ready to do some fist-pumping and relive the 1980s.

And at the Nasher Sculpture Center, Target First Saturdays gives your family the chance the explore art through a "Big Idea" and an art project. This month’s theme is “Collecting,” and the art project will be to make a collection collage.

You can exercise your detective skills by searching the Nasher for art related to the Big Idea, share in the joy of reading with storytellers from the Dallas Public Library, watch live artist demos and enjoy a special NasherKids Live! performance. The Nasher is a short walk from St. Paul Station. You also can take the D-Link (Route 722) or the M-Line Trolley.
