Friday, June 15

It’s the third Friday of the month, which always brings a pair of late-night events to the Dallas Arts District. ’til Midnight at the Nasher presents a performance by the band This Will Destroy You, as well as a screening of the film Love, Simon.

Just across Harwood Street, Late Nights at the Dallas Museum of Art is another fun cultural shindig with performances, concerts, readings, film screenings and tours.

Any DART Rail line will get you to St. Paul Station, from which both venues are a three-block walk. The D-Link and the M-Line Trolley are good ways to go, too.

Happening both Friday and Saturday, the annual Rodeo Hoedown at the African American Museum is as fun as it sounds. The hoedown is tonight and features food, Zydeco music, dancing and a host of other activities.

On Saturday, June 16, the 30th Annual Texas Black Invitational Rodeo takes place, with more than 300 African American cowboys and cowgirls competing for $25,000 in prize money. Take the Green Line to Fair Park or MLK, Jr, stations to get there.

Check out The Marketplace Garland, which offers fresh produce, baked goods, jams and more. It also is a great place to buy culinary items and browse the wares of local artisans and craftsmen.

The marketplace supports Good Samaritans of Garland. Feel free to donate canned or boxed food items, if you like. The twice-monthly event is held in the heart of Garland’s historic square, a short walk from Downtown Garland Station on the Blue Line.

Today also brings a couple of DARTable Juneteenth celebrations. The Juneteenth Arts & Music Festival in Plano is free, and will include games, bounce houses, vendors, and more. There will be live entertainment from Lady Wa "Nessa" B Monk, Ron Bultongez, Tyree Byndom, and the Helbing Jazz Initiative.

The festival is at the Douglass Community Boys & Girls Club (1111 H Ave.), which is about a half-mile walk from Downtown Plano Station on the Red Line.

In the other side of the Dallas area, a Juneteenth celebration is going down a short walk from West Irving Station on the Trinity Railway Express (TRE). Against the backdrop of a Texas Native Plant Garden, there will be an outdoor art exhibit featuring Dallas artist Guinn Powell.

The festivities also include free concerts, a community picnic sponsored by In-N-Out Burger, outdoor games and children's activities. The event is at the Jackie Townsell Bear Creek Heritage Center, 3925 Jackson Street.

It’s your last chance to catch The Firehouse Theatre’s production of the great American classic, Gypsy.  The story follows Rose, a gregarious stage mom determined to get her two daughters into show business. You know some of the songs, even if you don’t know you know them – "Let Me Entertain You" and "Everything's Coming Up Roses," for starters. The theater is a short walk from Farmers Branch Station on the Green Line.
