So much to choose from this weekend, especially on Saturday. It’s that time of year – there are festivals, outdoor events and a variety of ways to get your spring groove on. Get a jump on National Get on Board Day (that’s April 25, for those of you keeping score at home), and get on board for some April fun.

DBDT: Encore! - Rising Excellence is a dance performance that mixes hip-hop, Shakespearian narrative, rock’ n ’roll, and classical ballet. Eclectic enough? It should be: The work is a collaboration between two choreographers known for pushing the boundaries of dance – Dr. Lorenzo “Rennie” Harris and Juilliard-trained My’kal J. Stromile of the Boston Ballet. (Stromile also happens to be an alum of Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.) They created the piece especially for Dallas Black Dance Theater to perform at the
SOLUNA International Music & Arts Festival happening (mostly) in the Dallas Arts District this month. You can catch it tonight or Saturday at Moody Performance Hall, about an 8- or 9-minute walk from Pearl/Arts District Station on all four DART Rail lines.

Get KidzFit Fest is a fun way to approach healthy lifestyle changes. The free event brings hundreds of organizations together in the Centennial Building at Fair Park, in the name of fighting childhood obesity and promoting fitness. This year’s event is themed “Run, Learn & Play @ Fair Park.” Take them up on that offer, and get the whole family on the Green Line to Fair Park Station. At the event, you’ll find 67,000 square feet of interactive fitness activities, hands-on nutrition lessons, fun games, a kids’ race, obstacle courses and various sorts of entertainment. There are even prizes. The Oncor Kids’ Race begins at 10 a.m.; the festival takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Impulse is an art installation of 12 interactive LED seesaws. What does that mean exactly? We can’t say for sure, but it’s a safe bet you’ve never seen anything like it. The free, open-air exhibit is an experimentation with light and sound, and can be activated by the public. Sounds too cool to miss. The exhibit opens today at Sammons Park and runs through April 22, after which it will have a second run at Main Street Garden. Sammons Park is part of the AT&T Performing Arts Center, about an 8-minute walk from Pearl/Arts District Station.
Garland Heritage Celebration has food, music, entertainment, mechanical bull rides, a historical walking tour and more on the historic downtown square. The festival will also highlight the Landmark Museum’s newest exhibit, “Garland Arts & Entertainment,” which traces Garland's rich arts history back to the 1800s. The event takes place from 4-9 p.m.; the square is about a 5-minute walk from the Blue Line’s Downtown Garland Station.
HomeGrown Festival is an annual celebration of music – especially music with a Texas provenance. This year's headliners: The Toadies and Tripping Daisy. Featuring eight additional acts covering many genres on two stages, the festival in Main Street Garden also has art demonstrations, a dog park and local vendors selling art, wares, and food and beverages. Kids under 10 get in free. The park is only a 4-minute walk from St. Paul station on all four DART Rail lines.
Second Annual Smooth Spring Groove brings R&B/hip-hop artist Tamar Braxton to the Toyota Music Factory. The music and media star is sure to bring her A-game to hits such as “Love and War” and “My Man.” Other performers include Jagged Edge, Stokley and Dru Hill. The venue is a 10-minute walk from the Orange Line’s Las Colinas Urban Center Station.
Sunday, April 14
Once on This Island gets its last performance tonight at The Firehouse Theatre. The musical took Broadway by storm and racked up a Tony Award just last year. The Firehouse’s production of the life-affirming fairytale, with its Caribbean-tinged score, features a multiracial cast. The theater is near Farmers Branch Station on the Green Line.

DART is making major improvements. To create a smoother ride through downtown Dallas and reduce service interruptions, track improvements and rail replacement began March 30 and will last for roughly six months. During that time, DART Rail in downtown Dallas will be discontinued each weekend between Pearl/Arts District Station and West End Station. Separate shuttle routes will be in operation. Thanks for bearing with us as we build a better future for North Texas. DART.org/plus.
