There are also lots of performances, an early Mardi Gras party and a Valentine’s-themed outing for you and your significant other. You also can recognize Black History Month by attending a play that examines the legacy of the civil rights movement, and how it impacts one couple’s lives.

Thursday, Feb. 7

Bourbon at the Border opens tonight at the South Dallas Cultural Center and runs through Feb. 16. The play is set in Detroit in the ’90s. An activist couple whose lives were changed by the civil rights movement contemplates moving to Canada – but it turns out the residual effects of their 30-year-old battle still require their attention. Can love truly conquer all? Check out the compelling story and dynamic cast at the South Dallas Cultural Center, accessible by Bus Route 26. The bus departs from the West Transfer Center, just across from West End Station. The venue also is accessible by Bus Route 12. Get off at Fitzhugh and 2nd avenues.

Jim Jefferies is always thought-provoking and a little bit edgy. Sure, he addresses some benign topics like single fatherhood. But Jefferies isn’t afraid to take on stuff like gun control, politics and religion. The popular comedian comes to the Majestic Theatre tonight. It’s only about a three-block walk from St. Paul Station on all four DART Rail lines.

Chinese New Year is the Crow Museum of Asian Art’s 20th annual celebration. Help ring in the Year of the Pig at NorthPark Center. Did you know the pig is a symbol of wealth in China? This free, family-friendly festival features dragon dances, martial arts demos, calligraphy, cultural performances and lots more. Plus plenty of pig-related stuff! Some retailers will offer specials, and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Ensemble will perform. The event happens from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. To get there, take the Red or Orange lines to Park Lane Station, then catch the NorthPark Center Shuttle (Route 702).

Saturdays on the Square is an almost-new recurring event in Downtown Carrollton. This evening is Date Night – the Valentine's installment of the series. Celebrate true love, or even partially true love, with a screening of Crazy Rich Asians. Indulge in chocolates and other treats. Bring your sweetheart and a blanket or lawn chair to the Downtown Carrollton Square, a short walk from the Green Line’s Downtown Carrollton Station.  The event begins at sunset.

The Shreveport-Bossier Mardi Gras Pop-Up Party brings the spirit of Mardi Gras to Downtown Plano. The free party will celebrate Shreveport-Bossier-style, with live music, free gumbo, king cakes, Mardi Gras beads and a cash bar. It’s a fun, free taste of Carnival season, and it happens from 7-10 p.m. at event1013 – the venue is on 15th Street, a short walk from Downtown Plano Station on the Red Line.

Paul Taylor Dance Company performs at the Eisemann Center for the ninth time, bringing the gold standard of modern dance to Richardson. The program features four original dances: Aureole, 3 Epitaphs, Piazzolla Caldera and Promethean Fire. The Eisemann is right across the plaza from the Red Line’s Galatyn Park Station. DART Rail station.

The Buddy Holly Story gets its last performance tonight at Granville Arts Center. The presentation by Garland Civic Theatre follows the legendary, influential rocker through his meteoric rise to fame. Along the way, you’ll be treated to more than 20 classic songs. The venue is right next to Downtown Garland Station on the Blue Line.
