Friday, Jan. 26 

The Firehouse Theatre’s production of Forever Plaid opened this week and runs through Feb. 11. The fun, nostalgic revue is full of male quartet harmonies on such time-tested classic as "Three Coins in a Fountain," "Sixteen Tons," "Chain Gang," and many more. The theater is in Farmers Branch about three blocks from Farmers Branch Station on the Green Line.  

ZestFest starts today and brings on the spicy all week, with the spiciest food exhibitors from around the country coming together for a festival of bold flavors. If you like it hot, you’re in luck: There will be cooking demos by celebrity chefs and thousands of food samples. Add live music and interactive contests, and you’ve got the ingredients for a spicy weekend indeed. The zest happens at the Irving Convention Center, a short walk from Irving Convention Center Station on the Orange Line. 

Saturday, Jan. 27 

If you like it cool instead of hot, you won’t be left out in the cold this weekend – Irving's Frost Fest is a free winter festival with tons of fluffy snow and all the fun activities it brings. There will be a snow tubing hill, a snow play area with fresh snow every 30 minutes, a toboggan tunnel slide and lots more – including a petting zoo with a reindeer display. The cool event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cimarron Park, 100 Cimarron Trail; you can get there on Bus Route 401.

The fascinating exhibition First Sculpture: Handaxe to Figure Stone opens today at the Nasher Sculpture Center. This is the first museum exhibition to present ancient handaxes and figure stones as works of art. The longest-used tool in human history (examples date back about 2 million years), handaxes are equally fascinating on an aesthetic level. The Nasher is a short walk from St. Paul Station on all four DART Rail lines; you can also access the museum via D-Link (Route 722).

If you’ve got the wintertime blues, you can take a quick trip to the tropics today right on the Green Line. Travel to the Tropics Festival at the Texas Discovery Gardens puts a spotlight on the mood-lifting colors found in many of the butterflies in the gardens. Crafts for the kids and close-up encounters with butterflies help you explore the tropical regions where the beautiful winged creatures come from. The event is near both Fair Park and MLK, Jr. stations.

It’s the last day of Pegasus Theatre’s production of A Minor Case of Murder at the Eisemann Center. World-famous detective and aspiring actor Harry Hunsacker is back; with the help of his best friend (and paid-by-the-hour assistant) Nigel Grouse and the long-suffering Detective Lieutenant Foster, he faces one of his most puzzling cases yet. Will good win the day, or will evil triumph? It’s your last chance to find out.
