There’s a ton of live theater lined up this DARTable Weekend, as well as a kids’ film feat and building-block extravaganza. Read on to see where DART can take you.
Friday, Jan. 17
Deathtrap follows a successful writer struggling to overcome a dry spell who receives a script from a student – a thriller that he recognizes as a potential Broadway smash. He sets out to become a co-author, and many plot twists ensue. See the play through Feb. 1 at Irving Arts Center. Get there on bus route 229, departing from Dallas College North Lake Campus Station on the Orange Line.
Camp Death is Pocket Sandwich Theatre’s latest popcorn-tossing melodrama. You can catch the horror-themed comedy through Feb. 15, and it’s walkable from the Green Line’s Downtown Carrollton Station.
The Shakespeare Conspiracy imagines the Bard’s characters living in the real, present-day world. In the play’s world, they’ve been waging a secret war for over 400 years. See it through Jan. 25 at Cox Playhouse, just across Haggard Park from the Red Line’s Downtown Plano Station.
Friday, Jan. 17-Sunday, Jan. 19
Come From Away is a musical based on the true story of events following 9/11, when 7,000 airplane passengers were stranded in a small town in Newfoundland. A culture clash turned into enduring friendships. Catch it at the Winspear Opera House. That’s walkable from Pearl/Arts District Station on all four DART Rail lines.
Saturday, Jan. 18
MLK Day Parade celebrates the legacy of one of America’s greatest civil rights heroes. It starts at the Fair Park Pennsylvania Ave. entrance. The parade then proceeds westbound on Pennsylvania, turns right on Latimer St., and makes a right on MLK Blvd., returning to Fair Park.
The parade features approximately 250 entries from various community organizations, church groups, youth groups, nonprofit organizations, band/drill teams, colorful floats, and much more. It’s easily walkable from MLK, Jr. Station on the Green Line.
Saturday, Jan. 18-Sunday, June 19
Brick Fest Live is designed to inspire creativity and play with building blocks. Families can get hands-on with various challenges and collaborative builds. The event features a Guinness World Record challenge in which visitors help create a massive floor mosaic. It all happens at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, served by Convention Center Station on the Red and Blue lines.
KidFilm Family Festival is a free family event hosted by the USA Film Festival. Guest author Aaron Reynolds makes an appearance, along with numerous film screenings. Not only are they all free, but popcorn is half price. The festival takes place at the Angelika Film Center Dallas, right next to SMU/Mockingbird Station on the Red, Blue and Orange lines.
