At 40 years old, the DART System is bursting with cultural experiences and entertainment. If your plans include a "staycation," DART has you covered. In this series, we have 40 ideas for you to enjoy the perfect summer staycation.

This week we highlight live entertainment. For music and theater – and musical theater – lovers, there are numerous DARTable options for you to choose from to enjoy your staycation!

Live music venues
Some of the premier places to catch live tunes are DARTable. The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory is walkable from Irving Convention Center Station, also accessible by Bus Route 227; House of Blues is walkable from West End Station on all four DART Rail lines; and McCall Plaza hosts numerous outdoor musical performances just a block from Downtown Plano Station on the Red Line.

Community performance spaces
You’ll find music, spoken word and theater at the Granville Arts Center, next to Downtown Garland Station, and the Eisemann Center for Performing Arts, near Galatyn Park Station on the Red Line.

Mark your calendar for a few of our DARTable favorites: Addison Oktoberfest near Addison Transit Center Sept. 14-17; Plano Balloon Festival Sept. 21-24, a brisk walk from Parker Road Station; DFW Dragon Boat, Kite, and Lantern Festival near Las Colinas Urban Center Station Oct. 1; Bloomin’ Bluegrass Festival near Farmers Branch Station Oct. 20-21; and Festival at the Switchyard near Downtown Carrollton Station Nov. 4.

Honky tonks
For boot-scootin’ and celebrating all things Texas, head to Mama Tried, a Deep Ellum favorite with a new outpost near the Orange Line’s Irving Convention Center Station. And Gilley’s is a huge facility with four stages, walkable from the Red and Blue Line’s Cedars Station.

Movie theatersSome very cool cinematic experiences are near DART Rail stations. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has locations near the Orange Line’s Irving Convention Center Station and the Red and Blue Line’s Cedars Station. The Angelika Film Center, featuring independent and art films, is right next to SMU/Mockingbird Station on the Red and Blue Lines. Violet Crown Cinema is an easy walk from Cityplace/Uptown Station on the Red and Orange Lines and near an M-Line Trolley stop.

Performing artsWorld-class performances deserve world-class venues. The entire Dallas Arts District is walkable from Pearl/Arts District Station on all four DART Rail lines or the M-Line Trolley. The Meyerson Symphony Center is home to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The AT&T Performing Arts Center includes Winspear Opera House, Wyly Theatre and Moody Performance Hall.

Two of our professional teams – that would be the Stars and the Mavs, of course – play at the American Airlines Center. Taking DART to the Orange or Green Line’s Victory Station is the most convenient way to get your game on. You can also take the TRE.

Nothing can replace the thrill of live performances. Several of our best theaters are DARTable: WaterTower Theatre, walkable from Addison Transit Center served by several bus routes; The Firehouse Theatre, near the Green Line’s Farmers Branch Station; Pocket Sandwich Theatre, walkable from the Blue Line’s Downtown Garland Station; and Ochre House, practically across the street from Deep Ellum Station on the Green Line.

Live music
In its 42nd year, the Basically Beethoven Festival includes four free chamber music concerts featuring many of Dallas’ top professional musicians as well as up-and-coming rising stars. The theme for 2023 is “Music with Friends.” Don't miss a performance happening all throughout the month of July at the Moody Performance Hall, walkable from Pearl/Art's District Station on all four DART Rail lines.
