Downtown Carrollton_02.jpg Today is National Fried Chicken Day. If you plan on observing it properly – or having some other kind of good old-fashioned Southern comfort food -- check out these DARTable gems: Babe’s Chicken Dinner House in Carrollton is a local chain that specializes in made-from-scratch country cookin’ like crispy fried chicken and biscuits that are fluffy and served hot. The desserts taste just like grandma used to make and for good reason – the recipes are from the Vinyard family who founded Babe’s in 1993 and have operated it ever since. Take the Green Line to Downtown Carrollton Station. Known for its hometown, family-friendly atmosphere, Mama’s Daughters’ Diner has been an icon in Dallas for nearly 60 years. Patrons enjoy real-deal specialties like chicken-fried steak, pot roast, and biscuits and gravy. Don’t miss their tasty desserts – we recommend the coconut meringue pie. Take the Green Line to Royal Station. Norma’s Café is a Dallas staple that has been serving up Texas home cooking since 1956. Everything is homemade, including its home-style chicken, southern-fried catfish and their famous, Texas chicken fried steak. You will want to save room for their desserts, which include freshly baked fruit pies and steaming, hot cobbler. The Oak Cliff location is a favorite, but the Norma’s right by Park Lane Station is great, as well. Take Bus Route 405 or 542 (Oak Cliff location) or the Red Line to Park Lane Station (Park Lane location) For a big delicious helping of nostalgia, Big State Fountain Grill in Irving is the place. The old drugstore and soda fountain was renovated in 2014 and restored to glory by its new owners, lifelong Irving residents. The restaurant has a generous menu for breakfast and lunch. Their burgers are great, but you also will enjoy chicken strips, steak fingers and the holy grail of Texas comfort food -- chicken fried steak served with southern cream gravy and Texas toast. Take the Trinity Railway Express to Downtown Irving/Heritage Crossing Station. Discover other DARTable gems at DART.org/DARTable.
