DART reached another milestone in the Silver Line Regional Rail project with the Oct. 24 ceremonial groundbreaking for the Silver Line Equipment Maintenance Facility (EMF). DART Board members, agency executives and staff, community leaders, and representatives from our contractors gathered at the site of the future EMF. The facility will be west of Shiloh Road Station along the Silver Line corridor in Plano’s Research/Technology Crossroads district.
The EMF will be built within DART-owned railroad right of way in an area that widens to accommodate an unused railroad siding and an unused railroad spur. The agency also purchased an adjacent building at 3201 Technology Drive, which will provide office space, material storage, a crew room, lockers, and parking for Silver Line staff.
DART originally planned to store and service the Silver Line vehicles at our existing Trinity Railway Express maintenance facility in Irving and explored the costs of sharing the Denton County Transportation Association’s A-train rail operating facility in Lewisville. Since neither is located along the Silver Line, we realized that we could reduce the costs of deadhead travel – that is, moving trains without carrying customers – and overall annual maintenance and operations costs by building a new EMF along the corridor in Plano.
When complete, the EMF will include a fully enclosed drive-through vehicle wash, a fully enclosed maintenance building, below-ground fuel storage, track to store all eight rail vehicles, and a sound barrier wall near the Collinwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. DART will also update the appearance of the existing building and landscaping and install a security fence.
The agency has worked closely with the City of Plano and Plano Fire-Rescue on the design to ensure that the new transit facility meets or exceeds the city’s high standards. We are happy that we can redevelop an existing, vacant building, and bring workers who will support the restaurants and businesses located nearby in both Plano and Richardson. Strategic partnerships like these ensure that DART is both an asset and a good neighbor in the communities where we operate.
The facility is expected to be complete by mid-2026. Learn more about the Silver Line Regional Rail project at DART.org/SilverLine
