Aliens, storytelling, jazz and more. It’s shaping up to be a pretty good weekend, and the weather should be dry and – well, nowhere near as hot as it could be. That makes the outdoor offerings all the more appealing. And, of course, they’re DARTable. Jump into the weekend:

Friday, July 7

The Majestic Theatre screens E.T. the Extra Terrestrial – the 1982 Steven Spielberg outing that’s a classic if ever there was one. The story of young Elliot, who discovers a strange but adorable alien – one of the most recognizable characters in all of cinema -- is funny, a little creepy and a lot heartwarming. The Majestic is a short walk from St. Paul Station. You can get tickets at prekindle.

Saturday, July 8

Summer Reading and Art in the Plaza at CityLine Plaza happens from 10-11 a.m. near the "Over the Moon" sculpture. The free program is geared toward families with children ages 8 and under. This week, it will feature a reading of The Book of Mistakes by Corrina Luyken, followed by a creative project supporting the theme, Making Mistakes: What We Do with Them. The plaza is near Bush Turnpike Station.

Downtown Carrollton's Movie on the Square series continues with Guardians of the Galaxy, featuring brash adventurer Peter Quill and a powerful villain named Ronan. There's also a quartet of misfits who help Quill make a stand -- with nothing less than the fate of the galaxy at stake. The square is a short walk from Downtown Carrollton Station.

Addison's annual Summer Series provides great outdoor entertainment for free. Tonight, soak up some Joseph Vincelliunder the beautiful North Texas stars. Vincelli is a saxophonist who draws on eclectic sources to create unique contemporary jazz. His performance happens in Beckert Park, near Addison Transit Center.

Perot Museum Discovery Days happens every second Saturday. Tomorrow, the whole family can enjoy exploring the world of engineering. There will be engineering challenges to tackle, as well as lessons in design, building, and technology. Build your own structure, examine ancient architecture, and enjoy the museum’s fantastic traveling exhibition, Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed. The Perot is a short walk from Akard Station.

Sunday, July 9

It’s your last chance to catch the Dallas Children's Theater National Touring Production of John Steptoe's Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters: An African Tale. The beautiful Zimbabwe-based Cinderella tale celebrates goodness, generosity, and love with traditional dancing, rhythmic drumming, and glorious African song. The theater is accessible via DART Bus routes 501 or 583.
