Howdy, folks! The State Fair of Texas arrives this weekend, and along with it comes a month’s worth of rides, pig races, fried food – you know the drill. A fun parade in downtown Dallas kicks the whole thing off. There are lots of other things going on, too, from free movies to a gelato contest. Check out where DART can take you.

Friday, Sept. 28

State Fair of Texas Opening Day Parade is an event you don’t want to miss. This festive happening in downtown Dallas starts at noon at Houston and Main streets, then travels east on Main to the edge of Deep Ellum. It's a great annual tradition. You can take any of the four DART Rail lines to West End, Akard, St. Paul, or Pearl/Arts District stations to get within a few blocks of the fun.

Taste of the Fair goes on more or less concurrently, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Main Street Garden. Nothing says State Fair of Texas like food, and your favorites will be there: Fletcher's Corny Dogs, Pop's Kettle Corn, Mattie Mae's Fried Pies, and more. Stop by before or after the parade for some deep-fried indulgence. There also will be lawn games, a slide, and other fun stuff. St. Paul Station is only three blocks north.

The Red Pashmina is an intriguing story about a psychiatrist, two of her patients, and the unique revelations that can come from regression therapy. Presented by MainStage Irving-Las Colinas and the thinkIndia Foundation, the performance is full of live music, dance and drama. It runs Friday and Saturday only at the Irving Arts Center. You can get there by taking Bus Route 401 from North Lake College Station.

Saturday, Sept. 29

Gelato Festival America doesn’t have any fried food, but it’s still pretty indulgent. The event started in Europe, and it features top gelato artisans and chefs competing with original flavors they have created especially for the festival at the Dallas Farmers Market. You’ll get a chance to vote for your favorite. Decisions, decisions. Dallas Farmers Market is right on the D-Link. The festival/competition runs Saturday and Sunday and starts at 11 a.m.

Movies on the Square is a free film screening – along with other entertainment and activities – in Historic Downtown Carrollton. Grab a lawn chair or blanket and go check out Thor: Ragnarok, a superhero thriller based on the Marvel Comics character. The movie rolls at sunset around the 1100 block of South Broadway – a short walk from Downtown Carrollton Station on the Green Line.

Ultimate Dinosaurs at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science reveals a newly discovered breed of dinosaurs that evolved in South America, Africa and Madagascar. It's a fascinating study of species that are unfamiliar to most people. Highlights include 15 dinosaur casts, more than a dozen prehistoric specimens, lifelike recreations of the dinosaurs in the flesh, touchable fossils, play spaces for kids and more. Take any DART Rail Line to Akard or West End station, then take a short walk north.
