Did you know a longtime Xerox employee helped break down racial barriers in corporate America? Did you know there’s an underground tunnel from Union Station to Reunion Tower? Did you know one of The Monkees pioneered “alt-country”? There are lots of interesting stuff to discover this weekend. Let DART take you to these cool events and happenings.

Friday, Sept. 7

The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection at the ArtCentre of Plano celebrates the artists, writers and activists that made the Harlem Renaissance memorable and significant. The collection, much of it newly acquired, belongs to Bernard Kinsey, an African American, former Xerox employee who paved the way for greater equality in the workplace. This glimpse into another time and place is a short stroll across Haggard Park from Downtown Plano Station on the Red Line.

Saturday, Sept. 8

The 2018 Dallas Heart Walk lets you and your friends and family get a little exercise while raising funds for heart disease and stroke. The 3.5-mile walk starts at the base of Reunion Tower at 8:30 a.m. Check-in is at 6:30 a.m. There’s a one-mile “Miracle Mile” walk, as well. Both are non-competitive. Take the Red Line, Blue Line or Trinity Railway Express to Union Station. (Additional Red Line trains will be departing in the early morning from Parker Road Station.) A pedestrian tunnel leads from the station to Reunion Tower.

Concerts on the Square is an opportunity to experience Downtown Carrollton’s charming restaurants and shops – and enjoy some music under the stars. Saturday, bring lawn chairs or a blanket and “Step on the Square” to the sounds of Big City Outlaws. In addition to country music, the band plays classic hits. There also will be tasty treats and other fun stuff, all happening from 6-9 p.m. a short walk from Downtown Carrollton Station on the Green Line.

Pick Ups & Panels of North Texas Car-Truck Shootout is a place for vehicle enthusiasts to relax and trade stories. The day at picturesque Farmers Branch Historical Park will include great food and even a bounce house for the kids. The event happens from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The park is a short walk from Farmers Branch Station.

Mousey, thedark musical playing at Ochre House, gets its last performance tonight at 8:15 p.m. The play is about a toy mouse who questions existence. The ensuing rebellion among the toys causes them to turn on one another. There's puppetry, original music and dance, and a riveting fable at the play's heart. Ochre House is a block away from Fair Park Station on the Green Line.

Sunday, Sept. 9

Michael Nesmith & The First National Band won’t be monkeying around when they come to The Kessler Theater this evening. Drawing from the artist’s late-60s solo material, the evening will feature country rock along the lines of the Byrds or the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Catch the former Monkee’s groundbreaking “alt-country” at 8 p.m. You can get to The Kessler, located at Davis and Clinton, by taking Bus Route 542 from 8th & Corinth Station on the Red or Blue line. It’s also a one-mile walk from Bishop Arts Station on the Dallas Streetcar; there are tons of taverns and restaurants in between.
