AnimeFest kicks off today for its all-weekend run at the Sheraton Dallas, catty-corner from Pearl/Arts District Station. The convention is a paradise for fans of Japanese pop culture. It’s one of the longest-running events of its kind, and you can get there on all four DART Rail lines.
“Anomaly: The Magic of Robby Bennett and Other Curiosities” features the witty magician’s spellbinding routines and comical stories. The performance mixes fantasy and audience participation to create a unique evening of entertainment. Catch it at Richardson’s Eisemann Center, just across the plaza from Galatyn Park Station on the Red Line.
“As You Like It” is a dreamy tale of friends, family feuds and disguised lovers. Orlando and Duke Senior – along with his daughter and niece – escape to the fantastical Forest of Arden. Featuring an original folk-pop score, the play was named one of best shows of 2017 by the New York Times. It opens tonight and runs through Sunday at the Wyly Theatre. That’s about an 8-minute walk from Pearl/Arts District Station on all four DART Rail lines.
Latinidades is a unique festival of solo shows. Featuring spoken word, theater and music, it runs through Sept. 8. This weekend’s program is “Evolution of a Sonero,” a performance by Flaco Navaja. The Puerto Rican poet, singer, and actor calls it a love letter to his many muses – from Janis Joplin to Menudo, the Doors to Héctor Lavoe, and Rubén Blades to Jimi Hendrix. Performances take place at the Latino Cultural Center, just down the street from the Green Line’s Deep Ellum Station.
Saturday, Aug. 17
“The Legend of Deadeye Mary: A Western Melodrama” gets its last performance tonight at the Pocket Sandwich Theater. The play follows the title character as she hunts down the man who shot her father. It’s got all the elements of a true Western: outlaws, bounty hunters, a crooked lawman and gold. The fun evening of theater is one of the local institution’s famous “popcorn-tossers.” Get ready to pelt some colorful characters right across the street from Mockingbird Station on the Red or Orange Line.
Sunday, Aug. 18
29Rooms: Expand Your Reality closes after today. The creative, immersive experience features several bold, thought-provoking spaces. Among these multisensory environments, you’ll find a technicolor fur bedroom. Intrigued? Get to South Side Ballroom, a short walk from Cedars Station on the Red or Blue Line.
Vampire Weekend has been making smart, eclectic rock music for more than 10 years, earning them tons of awards and a loyal following. They perform tonight at the Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory, about a 9-minute walk from Irving Convention Center Station.
Lyle Lovett and His Large Band bring a different kind of musical evening to the Winspear Opera House. Lovett is true Texas royalty, with diverse influences and decades of road testing. Combining Americana, jazz, folk, gospel and blues, the performer also tells captivating stories between songs. The Winspear is about a 6-minute walk from Pearl/Arts District Station.
