Through March 17

The African American Pioneers in STEAM exhibition is on view at the African American Museum, Dallas now through March 17, 2023. The family-friendly exhibition features approximately 120 replicas and examples of items invented or improved by African Americans, from the three-light traffic light and the first automatic transmission to laser cataract surgery. Free and open to the public, the exhibition is presented by Fluor. The museum is a very short walk from Fair Park Station on the Green Line. 

Friday, Feb. 24-Sunday, Feb. 26

Modern Masterpieces includes three different pieces presented by Texas Ballet Theater. Bartok features playful motifs and intriguing backdrops; Image traces the tragic arc of Marilyn Monroe’s life; and Imbue is a minimalist piece celebrating human transformation. See it at the Wyly Theatre, a short walk from Pearl/Arts District Station on all four DART Rail lines, and an even shorter one from the M-Line Trolley.

Murder at the Howard Johnson’s is a light comedy about love and murder in a chain motel. A woman, her lover, and her husband are all guests at Howard Johnson’s Motor Lodge. What could go wrong? Find out at Pocket Sandwich Theatre, walkable from Downtown Carrollton Station on the Green Line.

Another Badu Birthday Bash rolls around again, with the beloved, eccentric musician celebrating another trip around the sun. Erykah Badu is called “The First Lady of Neo-Soul,” but her style defies genres, and she never fails to put on a captivating show. Help her celebrate at the Factory in Deep Ellum, walkable from the Green Line’s Deep Ellum Station.

The Peterson Brothers combine multiple genres into a jam-band style that’s heavy on improvisation. The duo have opened for the likes of Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Buddy Guy, and the late B.B. King. See them at Garland’s Plaza Theatre, a short walk from Downtown Garland Station on the Blue Line.

Black History Tour couldn’t be more DARTable – Hidden History DFW’s tour departs directly from J.B. Jackson, Jr. Transit Center. The three-hour tour starts at 9 a.m. and visits more than 20 historic sites tracing the African American journey in Dallas. The transit center is next to MLK, Jr. Station on the Green Line and is also served by bus routes 13, 104, and 216.

Alive at the End of the World is Full Circle Dance’s evening-length work of modern dance in five parts: Grief, Love, Time, Memory, and Hope. The piece plays off the gravity of these experiences, but also the redemption of being “alive at the end of the world.” Inspired by poet Saeed Jones' book of the same name, the program takes place at the Eisemann Center, right across the plaza from the Red Line’s Galatyn Park Station. There are afternoon and evening shows.
