Built in 1892, the building made of large blocks of red sandstone is known to Dallasites as “Old Red”. When it was first built, Old Red served as the Dallas County Courthouse. Today, the Old Red Courthouse is home to the Museum of Dallas Country History and Culture. It is located in the West End Historic District where our great city’s history is proudly displayed. The museum features many historical artifacts and photographs from Prehistoric times to the present including a WWI era gas mask; Clyde Barrow’s gun – of the infamous Bonnie & Clyde, handcuffs worn by Lee Harvey Oswald and even J.R. Ewing’s Stetson from the TV show, Dallas! The museum itself was renovated to take a more hands-on approach to showcasing Dallas’ history through the use of interactive touch screens, thousands of artifacts and videos. The Old Red Museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. General admission is $8, senior or student admission is $6, children ages 3-16 is $5 and children under age 3 get in free. DART riders can take the Blue or Red Line to Union Station and walk about three minutes to Old Red. On your way back, hop on the D-Link for more downtown exploration!
