Spring is the season of gardening – and Friday, May 12, is National Public Gardens Day! The occasion was created in 2008 to celebrate the important role that gardens play in their communities. The somewhat new tradition takes place the Friday before Mother’s Day. Celebrate the beauty of nature – at perhaps the most gorgeous time of year in North Texas – at the following, vibrant, DARTable public gardens: Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden is one of the top display gardens in North America. The 66-acre garden on the shores of White Rock Lake has magnificent floral displays providing breathtaking color. Additionally, there are more than 100 sculptures from Zimbabwe on display, and May 12 happens to be the year’s first Arboretum Family Overnight. The internationally-acclaimed Rory Meyer’s Children’s Adventure Garden features plenty of hands-on activities, and if you share your photos on Twitter or Facebook with the tag #NationalPublicGardensDay, you may win free tickets. East Dallas Community Garden The East Dallas Community Garden is the only community garden in Dallas with its own farmers' market. It was started in 1988 to provide East Asian (mostly Cambodian and Lao) families with garden space and a place to sell produce. It’s open daily, although the market is only open on Saturday mornings. Here you’ll find high quality greens, gourds, onions and lettuce, as well as more exotic offerings like taro stem and ivy leaf gourd vine tips. The garden is located at 1416 N. Fitzhugh Ave. near Bryan Street; you can get there by Bus Routes 1 or 24. Texas Discovery Gardens Inside historic Fair Park lies a nearly 8-acre, organic urban oasis. The Texas Discovery Gardens have beautiful native and exotic plants, as well as gardening workshops and guided tours.
