Celebrate Earth Day with a ride on one of DART's clean energy vehicles

dart-earthday Today is the 45th anniversary of Earth Day. The holiday, which began in 1970, has a mission to broaden, diversify and activate the environmental movement worldwide, through a combination of education, public policy, and consumer campaigns. For DART, it's easy. Our 90-mile light rail system is powered by electricity, while our bus fleet is powered by compressed natural gas. "Switching our bus fleet to compressed natural gas was a carefully weighed decision. But in the end, it was a no-brainer: Go with the fuel source that will promote clean air while saving taxpayers $120 million in fuel costs over the next 10 years," said DART President/Executive Director Gary Thomas. Compared with the alternatives, CNG offered both a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and fuel cost savings. And because it's powered by electricity, DART's light rail can make use of renewable energy resources like wind, solar and even hydro and produces less BTU's per passenger mile than cars and other forms of transportation. Sold yet? Leave the car at home and hop on a DART vehicle for a cleaner earth!
