Happy anniversary to us! On this date in 1996, DART Rail served its very first riders. It all began with Red and Blue Line service along the 20-mile starter system. Twenty-five years later, DART Rail has moved more than 500 million people. Now, the light rail system stretches more than 90 miles, making it the longest in North America. Watch this video to see just how far we’ve come!

Here are some highlights from our first 25 years of light rail service:

• December 2000 – DART became the first city in the southwest to feature a subway station – Cityplace/Uptown Station. The stop is buried 120 feet below North Central Expressway!
• 2002 – Over the course of that year, the light rail system continued its rapid growth, expanding to North Dallas, Richardson, Garland and Plano.
• November 2004 – DART opened Victory Station at American Airlines Center, connecting riders to Mavs and Stars games, concerts and more.
• June 2008 – DART began converting its light rail fleet by adding low-floor inserts to the existing vehicles to both increase passenger capacity and improve access for riders with mobility impairments. The new, longer trains are known as Super Light Rail Vehicles, or SLRVs.
• September 2009 – The first four Green Line stations open for service.
• December 2010 – DART opened the remaining 28 miles and 20 stations of the Green Line, as well as Lake Highlands Station along the Blue Line.
• July 2012 – The first segment of the Orange Line – covering 5.4 miles and introducing three new stations – began offering service.
• December 2012 - The second Segment of the Orange Line opened to Belt Line Station, as well as the 4.6-mile extension of the Blue Line to Downtown Rowlett.
• August 2014 – DART connected riders to the world with Orange Line service to DFW Airport Station.
• October 2016 – The Blue Line added two new stops, Camp Wisdom and UNT Dallas stations.
• April 2021 – Hidden Ridge Station opened along the Orange Line.
