Dallas Mayor’s Fair Provides School Supplies and More

Can you believe it’s already time to think about back-to-school? Preparing for a new year can be exciting, but for many Dallas-area families, it’s hard on the budget. The Dallas Mayor’s Back to School Fair helps lighten the load. The fair takes place on Friday, Aug. 3, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Centennial and Automobile halls in Fair Park. It’s a DARTable event, which is good because event organizers expect about 35,000 people to attend this “one-stop shop.” Just take a bus or the DART Rail Green Line to Fair Park Station, and the event venues are right inside the Main Gate. At the event, students who meet the eligibility requirements can get the school supplies they’ll need for free – plus immunizations and health, dental and vision screenings. They can even get free eyeglasses and haircuts if they need them. Pre-K through 5th grade students also will receive a colorful backpack. In a fun and informative environment, hundreds of booths will provide information on education and social services, as well as consultations on health issues such as asthma. Other topics – offered in English and Spanish – include fire safety, college readiness, housing, transportation, personal finances and literacy. To help make it entertaining, the fair features musical entertainment, games and kids’ activities. While you are there, come see DART at two locations. DART staff will have a booth inside the Automobile Building. DART’s 5 Star Customer Service van will be there too, parked on the street connecting the Centennial and Automobile buildings. At both spots, learn more about riding DART and discover the new services and payment options the agency is launching. Take a photo with us and share it on social media using the hashtag #DARTMayorsBack2School. Eligibility Requirements: Only Pre-K through 12th grade students who attend a Dallas ISD school or live in the city of Dallas and meet the 2018 Federal Poverty Guidelines may receive free school supplies. For Dallas ISD students, families must prove that the student attends a Dallas ISD school. Students who live in Dallas but attend other schools also must show proof. Preregistering is the best way to ensure eligible students receive school supplies at the fair. Eligible students may also register at the event. Visit mayorsbacktoschoolfair.com for details.
