sfc_14Imagine being able plan your trip, purchase your DART transit pass, and summon a driver for the last leg of your journey and never have to leave the GoPass app? That soon will be possible, thanks to a $1.2 million grant to DART from the U.S. Department of Transportation. DART will use this grant to more fully integrate ride-sharing services into its GoPass ticketing app. The free app, which was introduced in September 2013, has been downloaded more than 500,000 times. “GoPass is a payment tool that appeals to a diverse and vast audience,” DART Chief Financial Officer David Leininger says. “This grant, which we are greatly appreciative of, will allow us to provide more seamless integration with companies like Uber, Lyft and Zipcar; thereby making our app that much more powerful.” The $1.2 million grant is from the Mobility on Demand Sandbox program, which is part of a larger research effort at that supports transit agencies and communities as they integrate new mobility tools like smart phone apps, bike- and car-sharing, and demand-responsive bus and van services. Mobility on Demand Sandbox projects help make transportation systems more efficient and accessible, particularly for people who lack access to a car. These grants build on U.S. Department of Transportation’s successful Smart City Challenge, which inspired cities, federal agencies, universities, and the private sector to work together to harness new technologies.
