Mockingbird Station

It’s the last weekend of summer for a lot of area students, and the first weekend of the new schoolyear for others. Either way, there are lots of DARTable, family-friendly events happening, plus other stuff, too. Check it out:

Thursday, Aug. 24

Sunset Cinema on the Square presents Power Rangers in the Downtown Garland Square. This special back-to-school edition of the free movie series promises plenty of morphing. The movie begins at sunset a short walk from Downtown Garland Station.

Friday, Aug. 25

It’s opening night for Pocket Sandwich Theatre’s production of Don’t Dress for Dinner, which was a smash hit during its two-year run in Paris, its six-year engagement in London, and a Tony Award-nominated production on Broadway. It's the story of Bernard, who is planning a romantic weekend with his chic Parisian mistress while his wife is away. Farcical hijinks ensue, and you're guaranteed to be entertained by Pocket Sandwich Theatre’s rollicking production. It runs through Sept. 23. The theater is right across the street from Mockingbird Station.

Saturday, Aug. 26

The Tulisoma South Dallas Book Fair is a full day of open mic poetry, writing, art workshops, children's activities, book signings, and more. Admission is free. The fair takes place at the African American Museum, a very short walk from Fair Park and MLK, Jr. stations.

It’s the last Reunion Lawn Party of the year! Happening on the lawn across from Reunion Tower, this free event features live party bands, food trucks, Nodding Donkey beer garden and lawn games. This go-around, the tribute band Petty Theft will be on hand, bringing the sounds of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. It’s near Union Station.

Sunday, Aug. 27

It’s the last weekend day of Dollar Days at the Dallas Arboretum (the last official day is Aug. 31). Enjoy the end of summer with $1 admission, $2 hot dogs and root beer floats, $1 Popsicles and $4 ice cream sundaes. It's a great way for the family to say goodbye to summer. The Arboretum is served by DART Bus Route 60.
