Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, Jan. 15. Join DART in honoring the enduring legacy of one of the greatest civil rights advocates in American history. There are several DARTable events that entertain, inspire, and enlighten. Celebrate Dr. King by taking DART to the following happenings.

Tuesday, Jan. 9-Saturday, Jan 13
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center
MLK, Jr. Station (Green Line)

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Week features numerous events throughout the week, including a job fair, a symposium, a candle lighting ceremony and more.

 

Saturday, Jan. 13
African American Museum Dallas
Fair Park Station (Green Line)

The 2024 Dallas Civil Rights History Symposium joins together several local organizations, among them Preservation Dallas, Remembering Black Dallas, the African American Museum, Friends of the Juanita J. Craft Civil Rights House, and the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs. The symposium explores the legacy of Dr, Martin Luther King Jr., particularly the mark he left on the local community. Two speakers panels take place at the African American Museum at Fair Park: "MLK in Dallas: Dr. King's Visits, and the Community Response,” and “It Starts with Me: Youth Activism in 21st-Century Dallas.” In addition to attending speaker panels, you can view the museum exhibits and catch a shuttle to tour the Juanita J. Craft Civil Rights House.

The event is about 8/10 of a mile from the station.

The 3rd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's legacy. The event, hosted by the City of Rowlett Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commission, includes speakers, performers, vendors, and a "Continuing the Dream Contest" for local students.

Irving Arts Center
Bus Route 229, departing from Dallas College North Lake Campus Station (Orange Line)

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance Event is Irving’s celebration, featuring feature dance, song, poetry, and art performed by the Dallas Black Dance Theatre and Kamica King.

 

Saturday, Jan. 13
Carrollton City Hall
Bus Route 233, departing from Farmers Branch Station (Green Line)

MLK Parade & Program begins behind Carrollton City Hall and proceeds west to Josey Lane; south on Josey Lane to Keller Springs Road; east on Keller Springs Road to Kelly Boulevard; and south on Kelly Boulevard to end at Ted Polk Middle School.

 

Saturday, Jan. 13-Sunday, Jan. 14
Granville Arts Center
Downtown Garland Station (Blue Line)

35th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration kicks off with a parade on Saturday. The parade starts near Embree Park and ends at the Granville Arts Center. The musical Lift Every Voice and Sing is then presented at the Granville, with performances by the MLK Communitywide Youth Choir and Garland Independent School District fine arts students. On Sunday, the Granville will host A Praise Dance & Step Team Youth Extravaganza, which features youth groups from area churches and Garland ISD.

 

Monday, Jan. 15
South Dallas/Fair Park
MLK, Jr. Station (Green Line)

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade starts at the intersection of Holmes Street and MLK, Jr. Blvd. and proceeds up Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd, to Fair Park. The parade features approximately 250 entries from various community organizations, church groups, youth groups, nonprofit organizations, band/drill teams, colorful floats, and much more.

 

Monday, Jan. 15
Downtown Plano/Plano African American Museum
Downtown Plano Station (Red Line)

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade in Plano begins at the mural located on 12th Place and I Avenue – in the historically black Douglass community. Following the parade will be a celebration at the corner of I Avenue and 13th Street and the Plano African American Museum. The museum is hosting several activities for children, including a scavenger hunt around the Douglass neighborhood, arts and crafts, and a time capsule, which will be buried in front of the museum.
