Celebrate the Holidays on the M-Line

Holiday on M-Line Trolley
Posted on Nov 28, 2023 by DART Daily
Holidays in the city have a unique and radiant vibe. And the M-Line trolley takes you straight through the heart of Uptown Dallas, where you’ll find numerous performances, shopping options, and other ways to celebrate the season.

The M-Line’s vintage streetcars travel from the northern end of Uptown, where they connect with DART’s Cityplace/Uptown Station, to the downtown Dallas Art District and beyond, where they again connect with DART Rail one block from St. Paul Station. Along the way, all of walkable Uptown is within mere steps of the trolley stops.

If you start your journey at Cityplace/Uptown Station (served by the Red, Blue and Orange lines), you’ll be a couple of blocks from West Village, one of Dallas’ mainstays for shopping. The dense, walkable area not only has tons of shopping options to help you cross some names off your list, but also great restaurants, bars, a movie theater and more.

Just a little bit down the line, you’ll be right in the thick of Uptown, where you’ll find dozens of restaurants and bars – along with Theatre Three, one of the city’s most longstanding theater companies. From Dec. 7-31, check out Deathtrap, the longest running comedy thriller that ever hit Broadway. Without a success to his credit for some years, a playwright sets out to plagiarize a play written by one of his students. This skillful evening of theater combines gasp-inducing thrills and devilishly clever comedy. The theater is only a couple of blocks from the trolley stop at McKinney & Worthington.

Klyde Warren Park - Christmas TreeKeep heading south, and the Dallas skyline will begin to come into view. Serving as the border between Uptown and downtown, Klyde Warren Park has been called “Dallas’ front yard.” It’s the perfect place for a Tree Lighting, which takes place Saturday, Dec. 2, from 3-6 p.m. The festive day of activities and entertainment features photos with Santa, story time with Mrs. Claus, face painting, crafts and games. There are performances by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Pegasus Ballet, Turtle Creek Chorale, Corazon and Valiente Ballet Folklorico, The day culminates with live music from the Emerald City Band, visits from Frosty and Rudolph and the lighting of The Mayor’s Tree. The M-Line drops you off right at the park.

The M-Line enters downtown by heading directly into the Dallas Arts District. The 118-acre neighborhood is home to some of Dallas’ most distinctive modern architecture, with world-class venues hosting a variety of distinguished arts organizations. Through Dec. 3, The Nutcracker is a much-loved holiday tradition featuring indelible characters such as the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Mouse King. See Texas Ballet Theater’s classic production of this seasonal favorite at the Winspear Opera House, easily walkable from the M-Line. Just across the street, A Christmas Carol rejoices in the holiday spirit with spectacular sets, flying ghosts and rousing music. The crowd-pleaser plays Nov. 30-Dec. 30 at the Wyly Theater.

The M-Line’s final stop in downtown before looping back north up Olive Street is at Olive & Federal. You can connect to or from St. Paul Station, served by all four DART Rail lines, one short block away. You’re only a four-block walk from the Majestic Theatre, a hundred-plus-year-old Renaissance Revival gem in the middle of downtown Dallas. On Dec. 15-16,  The Polyphonic Spree 20th Annual Holiday Extravaganza stars Dallas’ premier – and only – rock band/choir/orchestra. The world-famous group, led by front man Tim DeLaughter, puts on a rousing holiday show two nights in a row. Also check out screenings of Elf on Dec. 20; It’s A Wonderful Life on Dec. 21; and, on Dec. 22, a performance by Merry-Achi Christmas. Latin Grammy nominees Maestro José Hernández and his world-renowned Mariachi Sol de Méxicò - Embajadores del Mariachi return with their annual Christmas holiday show.
