It’s official: DART is Texan by Nature 20 (TxN 20). The accolade recognizes DART's innovative pursuit of conservation, and it comes from the non-profit of the same name. Texan by Nature was founded by Laura Bush, and it’s the second year the organization has ranked Lone Star companies and agencies across 12 industries.

DART’s been committed to conservation and has sought sustainable solutions in our planning and development. The maintenance department recycles just about everything – plastic jugs, aluminum cans and about 22,000 gallons of antifreeze yearly, according to DART’s fall 2018 issue of Inmotion.

We run a clean fleet, too, with our buses operating on compressed natural gas. We’ve even added a few electric buses into the mix. Along with the DART Rail and Dallas Streetcar vehicles, these electric buses run as zero-emission vehicles. You can see the electric buses on Route 749 and Route 52, which both make stops at Convention Center Station.

DART facilities are green, too. Many of our our transit centers and rails stations have drought-tolerant landscaping, and as of 2018, approximately 70 percent of DART's passenger shelters used solar-powered lights.

When possible, we’ve adaptively reused existing structures. In 2011, DART’s remodel of the historic Monroe Shops building into a police facility (near Illinois Station) was granted the LEEDS platinum certification. It was the first time a publicly owned building on the National Register of Historic Places earned an officially “green” rating.

We’re proud to have been named TxN 20, and we share that distinction with our riders. You help cut greenhouse gas emissions. You reduce wear and tear on your vehicle. You’re doing your part to conserve resources.

One more thing: DART’s GoPass app and GoPass Tap cards promote conservation by eliminating the need for paper tickets. These contactless payment methods offer a safe option for purchasing your transit passes during the pandemic. You can download the GoPass app for free from the Apple App Store or from Google Play or purchase a GoPass Tap card at 7-Eleven stores or other participating retailers.
