That’s why April is Dallas Arts Month – to celebrate the city’s vibrant, creative side that Forbes called a “cultural explosion.”

You can find much of that burst of creative energy within steps of the DART Rail System. Whether your taste runs to folk art or more avant garde fare, an artistic adventure on DART is guaranteed to be a trip. Here are some favorite local venues.

When it comes to the Dallas arts scene, Deep Ellum is the first word. This established enclave is enjoying a renaissance, with new galleries popping up and old stalwarts going stronger than ever. Get off the Green Line at Deep Ellum Stationand check out the offerings at the artist owned-and-operated Kettle Art Gallery, where up-and-coming local talent sell their works of art. Other notable venues include Kirk Hopper Fine Art. Or hit Fair Park Station and stroll up Exposition Avenue to the bohemian institution 500X Gallery, a space that’s shown contemporary work by local artists since the 1980s.

Two blocks from Cedars Station the South Side on Lamar is a mixed-use loft community that has always been a haven for artists. The Janette Kennedy Gallery displays the works of these artists, as well as other local and national artists working in a broad range of media. It’s a great way to get a bead on the local talent, and there are plenty of cafes and other funky finds in the area as well.

Dallas isn’t the only one getting its art groove on. Located in a pair of historic buildings near the Red Line’s Downtown Plano Station, the ArtCentre of Plano is a community arts center with high-quality, diverse programming in a charming setting. Near Downtown Carrollton Station on the Green Line, check out the Plaza Arts Center, where fine art, jewelry, gifts and stones are on display for viewing and purchase.

Colleges are incubators of artistic talent, as a stop at University of Dallas Station will confirm. The Beatrice M. Haggerty Gallery is an integral component of the university’s art department. Its exhibitions include not only student art, but an array of contemporary artists.

To create a smoother ride through downtown Dallas and reduce service interruptions, track improvements and rail replacement began March 30 and will last for roughly six months. During that time, DART Rail in downtown Dallas will be discontinued each weekend between Pearl/Arts District Station and West End Station. Separate shuttle routes will be in operation.
