Mild temperatures in January are always cause for getting out of the house, and this weekend gives you plenty of places to go. Check out ancient instruments or a brand-new event. Explore the turbulent Civil Rights era or be soothed by chamber music. Wherever you go, DART’s the way to get there. We recommend the following events. Thursday, Jan. 10Shen Yun opens tonight at the Winspear Opera House and runs through Jan. 27. The dance program transports you to ancient China. With breathtaking choreography, vivid costumes and a live orchestra, the show promises one-of-a-kind-entertainment.  You can get to the Winspear by taking any DART Rail line to Pearl/Arts District Station and walking about eight minutes to the heart of the Dallas Arts District. Friday, Jan. 11 Herman’s Hermits were the epitome of 60s pop music. With Peter Noone at the helm, the band turned out a string of hits that are still mainstays of oldies radio (“I'm Into Something Good,” “Mrs. Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter,” etc.). Tonight, Noone takes the stage at the Eisemann Center, accompanied by the latest iteration of Herman's Hermits. Take the Red or Orange Line to Galatyn Park Station, walk a few hundred feet across the plaza and get into something good. Mahler’s The Song of the Earth was the composer's greatest symphony, according to no less than Leonard Bernstein. The Dallas Symphony Orchestra brings it to life with mezzo-soprano Kelly O’Connor and tenor Russell Thomas. The program starts out with Mozart’s evocative Symphony No. 38, also known as the “Prague Symphony.” Catch it at the Meyerson Symphony Center – about an 8-minute walk from Pearl/Arts District Station. Any DART Rail line will take you there. Saturday, Jan. 12 Saturdays on the Square is a brand-new event in Historic Downtown Carrollton. For its inaugural outing, the city will present a family-friendly comedy show. Grab a blanket or lawn chair and take the Green Line to Downtown Carrollton Station.  The square is two blocks south, at Broadway and Main. The food, laughter and fun happen from 6-8 p.m. A Season of Family and Friends is part of Fine Arts Chamber Players' free Bancroft Family Concert Series at the Dallas Museum of Art. Tonight’s program, “Ancient Instruments in Modern Time,” features Russell Campbell, Associate Principal Trumpet of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and DSO Principal Harp Emily Levin. They’ll perform Debussy, Gershwin and more with an unusual pairing of instruments – both of which have been around for millennia. The concert is free, and it starts at 3 p.m. in the museum’s Horchow Auditorium. The DMA is about a five-minute walk north from St. Paul Station, served by all four DART Rail lines. Sunday, Jan. 13 Fetch Clay, Make Man gets its last performance today at the Wyly Theatre. The play is about the friendship between Muhammad Ali and the vaudevillian Stepin Fetchit. The drama takes place against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement. Today’s performance is a 2 p.m. matinee; the theater is roughly a nine-minute walk from Pearl/Arts District Station. Where are you going on DART this weekend?
