Earth Day was April 22 – but Dallas’ big annual celebration will be taking place all weekend long. Be sure to stop by and say hi to us! We’ll be glad to show you around DART’s cool, all-electric bus that will be on site. Elsewhere this weekend: Shakespeare, murderous nuns, make-out music, and a great festival being held by our neighbors up north. Read on to find out more.

Friday, April 26

EarthX Expo is one of the world’s largest gatherings of its kind. The free, three-day festival in Fair Park takes place all weekend. Springtime fun will be in the air, with live music, food and beer. You’ll also find environmental organizations, academic institutions and other subject-matter experts on hand to educate and enlighten. To get to the celebration of all things green, take (you guessed it) the Green Line to Fair Park Station.

Stravinsky Firebird puts two of Stravinsky’s most popular works in one concert for a four-day run. The great composer wrote Fireworks as a wedding present for a friend; the enchanting and exotic The Firebird was the work that put him on the map. The Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s performance of the pieces is part of the SOLUNA Festival happening in the Dallas Arts District (for the most part) throughout April and early May. After the concert, you can stay after to talk about the performance with the musicians and enjoy a beverage from the cash bar. Take any DART Rail line to Pearl Arts District Station, then walk about 6 minutes north to get to the Meyerson Symphony Center. There are shows Friday and Saturday evenings, plus a matinee on Sunday.

Al Green – that’s the Reverend Al Green to you – needs no introduction to fans of classic soul music. The maestro of make-out music is touring for the first time in seven years, but it’s only a five-date run – luckily for us, one of those is tonight at The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory. Let the soft-voiced Reverend “Take You to the River” and deliver a slew of other classic hits, along with his awesome, more recent material. The venue is about a 9-minute walk from Irving Convention Center Station on the Orange Line.

Saturday, April 27

Nunsense has become a classic since its first production nearly 35 years ago. The musical comedy concerns Sister Julia, who has accidentally poisoned 52 of her fellow sisters. How will she raise money for all the burials? Why, put on a musical, of course! (Cue opening notes of “Turn Up the Spotlight.”) The production by Garland Civic Theatre is playing at the Granville Arts Center, right next to the Blue Line’s Downtown Garland Station. It opened on Thursday and runs through May 12

Denton Arts & Jazz Festival is an annual celebration in the music capital of North Texas. There’s great music, good food and beautiful art. The free event kicked off Friday evening and runs through the weekend. Multiple stages showcase the best in jazz and blues, artists and crafters sell their unique wares, and delicious food abounds. There are even kids’ activities. To get there, take the Green Line to Trinity Mills Station, then transfer to DCTA’s A-train. At MedPark Station, there is a free shuttle that will take you to Quakertown Park, where all the fun is happening.

Sunday, April 28

Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare’s finest comedies, and Dallas Theater Center’s production gets its last performance at today’s 2 p.m. matinee. Viola has just lost everything in a shipwreck, including her twin brother. In a strange land, she disguises herself as man to get work. (This subterfuge always seems to work in Shakespeare plays.) She’s hired as a servant to a duke, but falls in love with him. Outlaws! Rescues! Love triangles! Adventure! They’re all here, at the Wyly Theatre, about a 7-minute walk from Pearl/Arts District Station.

The Sounds of Spring is a free concert by the Plano Community Band, with music by Percy Grainger, Eric Whitacre, and Plano’s own David Lovrien. The concert begins at 2:30 p.m. at the Eisemann Center, right across the plaza from Galatyn Park Station on the Red Line.

Building a Better Experience for You!

DART is making major improvements. To create a smoother ride through downtown Dallas and reduce service interruptions, track improvements began March 30 and will last for roughly six months. During that time, DART Rail in Downtown Dallas will be discontinued each weekend between Pearl/Arts District and West End stations. Bus bridges will be in operation. DART.org/plus
