This weekend is full of performances, ranging from comedy to soul music. There’s also a great opportunity to spice things up, with a great annual festival celebrating the joys of capsaicin – that’s the stuff that makes peppers hot. Read on to see where you can take DART on this warmer, precipitation-free (at least we hope) weekend. Friday, Jan. 25 ZestFest opens today and runs all weekend. The festival of all things fiery features exhibitors from around the country showcasing thousands of foods that are as spicy as you please. You’ll find lots of mom-and-pop shops, along with big industry names. There are cooking demos from celebrity chefs, a roasted-pig-and-BBQ dinner, and food challenges. That’s right – you can go toe-to-toe with other heat-heads in the Fiery Food Challenge, the Atomic Wing Challenge and, yes, the PuckerButt Jalapeno Eating Contest. That sounds like a two-part challenge, but who’s counting? The incendiary festival takes place at the Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas, served by Irving Convention Center Station on the Orange Line. Iliza Shlesinger is one of today's leading comedians. Her unique social commentary and take on pop culture have earned her a dedicated fan base; she’s the only female winner of NBC's Last Comic Standing, and Esquire magazine named her one of the top contenders in the business. She performs tonight at Dallas’ Majestic Theatre, only a three-block walk from St. Paul Station. All four DART Rail lines go there. Saturday, Jan. 26 Toni Braxton hits Irving tonight in support of her latest, Sex & Cigarettes, which received three Grammy nominations. Catch her husky, elegant brand of R&B when the sultry diva performs at the Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory, a short walk from the Orange Line’s Irving Convention Center Station. The Boy Who Would be Captain Hook is a funny and moving coming-of-age story performed by actor David Harrell. Born without his right hand, he doesn’t participate in recess. That all changes when the game becomes Peter Pan, and he discovers he makes a perfect Captain Hook. But what happens when he decides he wants to change the game? Harrell serves as both storyteller and performer, becoming colorful characters from his childhood. The one-man show happens at 3 p.m. at the Eisemann Center, just across the plaza from the Red Line’s Galatyn Park Station. Sunday, Jan. 27 The Glass Menagerie gets its last performance at today’s matinee at The Firehouse Theatre. It’s one of modern theater's most famous plays. Tom works in a shoe warehouse to support his family since his father left, but he hates his job; he escapes by going to the movies. When he brings a friend to meet his shy sister, Laura, the two hit it off. The story that follows is one of broken dreams. The Firehouse is a short walk from Farmers Branch Station on the Green Line.
