Happy Labor Day weekend! It’s the unofficial end of summer, but you wouldn’t know it from the weather. We’ve picked out some DARTable – and mostly indoor – activities for you to enjoy.

Don’t forget that DART will operate on a holiday schedule on Monday, Sept. 6, so check out our post with all the details.

Friday, Sept. 3

The Riverfront Jazz Festival takes place all weekend long on three stages – all of them within a 10-minute walk of Convention Center Station on the Red and Blue lines. Performers include Erykah Badu, David Sanborn, and many more. To check out this year’s schedule, visit the festival’s website.

Saturday, Sept. 4

Shen Yun is a multifaceted theatrical experience that has classical Chinese dance, dynamic animated backdrops and original orchestral compositions. There are two performances: on Saturday and one on Sunday at the Eisemann Center for Performing Arts in Richardson. That’s just across the plaza from Galatyn Park Station on the Red Line.

Sunday, Sept. 5

A Raisin in the Sun is a classic drama about a black family in 1950s Chicago. The story touches on identity, justice, and moral responsibility, and remains as powerful as ever. You can catch the play at the WaterTower Theatre through Sept. 12. The theater is a short walk from Addison Transit Center, served by numerous bus routes.

Monday, Sept. 6

Labor Day Parade in Downtown Garland features bands, cheerleaders, and drill teams from throughout the city. The parade starts at Glenbrook Drive at Avenue D, and ends at Fifth and Austin streets. There will be post-parade activities including a vintage car show on the square, and a karaoke contest at the Plaza Theatre. The festivities are all within walking distance of the Blue Line’s Downtown Garland Station.
