North Texas cities have added some fresh new faces to our region’s already impressive array of parks. If you're wondering where to go in this new year, hop on board and check out these welcoming green spaces.

Joya at Oran Good Park (Farmers Branch) is a brand-new park feature that’s plenty of fun for kids in the daytime. But it’s at night that Joya really shines – or, rather, glows. The glow-in-the-dark playground has hands-on features such as a zip line, a spin zone, and radiant seating that all come alive with interactive lighting. The park is accessible from bus routes 227 and 233.

Stevie Ray Vaughan Park (Cockrell Hill) celebrates the legacy of one of history’s greatest guitarists. The park is not only in the city where the legend started his career – it’s on the same site where he gave his first concert at age 12. You can see a photo of that event at the park. The Hill Theater no longer stands, but the unique space now features murals in an inviting oasis of green. The park hosts live music, food trucks, and more. You can get to the park on DART Bus Route 9.

Harwood Park (Dallas) sits in downtown Dallas’s East Quarter neighborhood, near the Farmers Market. Dallas’ newest park is nearly 4 acres, and features a huge playground, an interactive water feature, pickleball and basketball courts, two dog parks, and a welcoming pavilion at the Harwood Street entrance.  The park is about a 7-minute walk from St. Paul Station and is also easily accessible from any of the many buses that run on Elm and Commerce streets.

Heritage Park (Irving) was renovated over a period of years, reopening to the public in 2021. In 2023, the park was a finalist for the 2023 Texas Downtown Association President’s Award in the category of Best Public Improvement for a city with more than 50,000 people. The project nearly tripled the public space from a single acre to just under three. New features include lighting, walking paths, restored historical buildings and a state-of-the-art stage with a 15x20-foot LED screen. There’s also a playground, as well as parking for food trucks. The park is near Downtown Irving/Heritage Crossing Station on the Trinity Railway Express (TRE).

Downtown Square (Garland) is a remarkable reimagining of the historic square. After a two-year renovation, the new space opened in October 2023 – and it’s bringing a new level of energy to the downtown neighborhood. The revitalized space includes an event lawn for entertainment, a pavilion, and a grand entrance that lights up at night. The square itself has been upgraded with wider sidewalks and other additions, and boasts 12 local eateries as well as a wide variety of shopping options. The square is an easy walk from the Blue Line’s Downtown Garland Station.
