Projected to open in late 2024, the Silver Line regional rail project will improve mobility and accessibility across the northern portion of the DART Service Area. Serving seven cities -- Plano, Richardson, Dallas, Addison, Carrollton, Coppell and Grapevine -- the 26-mile corridor will span from Shiloh Road in Plano to DFW Airport (Terminal B). In fact, a Silver Line rider will be able to make the trek from Plano to DFW Airport in just under an hour.
The airport is just the beginning of the destinations this corridor serves. The Silver Line will make it easier for you to get to lots of places, or head to special events. In addition, since its trains meet the EPA’s strictest regulations, the Silver Line will also clear the air by providing a more environmentally-friendly transportation option.
The Silver Line serves three counties -- Collin, Dallas and Tarrant -- and provides key connections to existing transportation options, including DART’s Orange, Green and Red lines; Trinity Metro’s TEXRail; and airline service at DFW Airport. When you consider the connection to TEXRail, riders will be able to enjoy nearly 60 miles of regional rail service stretching all the way from Plano to Fort Worth!
This rail line is about more than just connecting people to cities, though. It’s about connecting people to jobs. With more than 200,000 jobs located within a half-mile of the corridor, this line will connect employees with employers. The area surrounding the station at Cypress Waters alone is home to thousands of jobs, with nearby tenants such as 7-Eleven, Brinker International, CoreLogic, Mr. Cooper, Nokia, Signet Jewelers, Toyota Industries Commercial Finance and more. All aboard for big business!
The Silver Line will also connect people to higher education. The station on the University of Texas at Dallas campus will be one of the key stops along the corridor. Located in Richardson, UTD is a public university boasting more than 28,000 students. The university’s eight schools provide more than 140 undergraduate and graduate programs, in addition to professional certificates and fast-track programs.
Still relatively young in institutional years, the school’s beginnings date to the 1960s when the founders of Texas Instruments created the Graduate Research Center of the Southwest -- the basis for what became UTD -- in the hopes of providing better higher education opportunities locally. Born from this entrepreneurial spirit, UTD has blossomed into one of the nation’s top public research institutions. Learn more about UTD here.
But the Silver Line also has a fun side, too, with stops at several entertainment districts. For example, the station at Addison Transit Center is nearby Addison Circle Park -- home to renowned special events such as Addison Oktoberfest, Taste Addison and Addison Kaboom Town! The line also puts you within walking distance of Downtown Carrollton, home to quaint shops and restaurants, plus unique events such as the annual Festival at the Switchyard, Santa on the Square, TEXFest and more. In addition, the aforementioned station at Cypress Waters places you in the heart of a 1,000-acre master-planned development that features dining, shopping and more. Cypress Waters is also home to The Sound, a venue for concerts and special events.
Archer Western and Herzog have teamed up to build the Silver Line. As construction continues on the corridor, DART and Archer Western Herzog have made the public’s safety their top priority. The Silver Line will feature extensive safety measures including quad gates, non-mountable barriers, raised curbs, safety lights, signage, horns and more. It all adds up to a safer community! 2024 may seem like a long way off, but the Silver Line will arrive before you know it. DART encourages you to stay up to date on the project’s progress by attending public meetings online, signing up for construction alerts or visiting DART.org/SilverLine.
