Igor & The Red Elvises probably aren’t like anything you’ve heard before. Funk, surf music, rockabilly and disco are all within the band’s eclectic reach. Why not throw in traditional Russian folk music for good measure? The L.A.-based outfit comprises both Russian and American members, who collude to make quirky and ingenious sounds at Poor David’s Pub, a couple of blocks from Cedars Station on the Red and Blue lines.
Saturday, Nov. 9
The Urban Flea is a must-go for aficionados of vintage stuff and handmade, artsy doo-dads. Garland’s market features dozens of vendors, plus live music to complete the experience. It happens in the city’s historic downtown square area, which is sort of a vintage find in itself; the neighborhood’s hundred-year-old buildings are full of mom-and-pop shops and restaurants. Take the Blue Line to Downtown Garland Station to get there. The event is from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Fight for Air Climb is one of American Lung Association's signature fundraising events. Raise money for the organization by climbing the stairs of one of Dallas’ coolest skyscrapers. Climb Fountain Place with friends, family, coworkers or solo. The51-floor climb begins at 8 a.m. The I.M Pei-designed icon is three blocks from Akard Station on all four DART Rail lines.
Holiday at the Arboretum is a classic holiday tradition that opens today. The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden celebrates the 12 Days of Christmas by depicting each day with its own Victorian-style gazebo. More than one million lights light up the garden and a 30-foot-tall spruce tree. The magnificent DeGolyer House is transformed into a showcase of European-style Christmas markets. There’s a brand-new Christmas Village, too, featuring 12 old-world European-style shops and façades that measure nearly 20 feet tall. Choirs, local musicians, jugglers, dancers, and plate spinners – are we missing anything that would create a holiday mood? Ah, Santa, of course, and he’s on hand every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. DART Bus Route 60 departs from Union Station and drop you off at Garland Road & Lakeland Drive, right across the street from the front gate. The event goes on through the end of the year.
The City of Glenn Heights Veterans Day 5K Race and Fun Run is a great way to honor those who have served while getting a little exercise into the bargain. Both the run and the walk are free events; you can pre-register for $15 and receive a t-shirt. At the event, registration opens at 7 a.m.; the fun run begins at 8:15 a.m. with the 5K following at 8:30 a.m. After the runs, there will be an Appreciation Ceremony that is free to attend.
A Chorus Line is one of the best-known shows in all of musical theater, and its run at the Irving Arts Center ends after today. The play examines 17 dancers vying for a spot in a Broadway musical; the audience gets to know each as an individual. Catch the funny, moving play by taking Bus Route 401 from the Orange Line’s North Lake College Station.
Sunday, Nov. 10
Side Show is based on the lives of actual conjoined twins who became famous in the 1930s. Told through song, the story follows them from England to America, and ultimately to Hollywood, where they are cast in the movie
Freaks. The musical at The Firehouse Theatre in Farmers Branch explores, among other things, the twins’ relationship with Harry Houdini. The venue is right across the street from Farmers Branch Station on the Green Line. Today’s matinee is the play’s last performance.
Monday, Nov. 11

EBJ Union Station is served by the Red and Blue lines, as well as the Trinity Railway Express.
