Dallas' first modern streetcar begins service this week and in recognition we're taking a look back in time when streetcars were the premier method for travel across Dallas and the North Texas area. Long before DART's Green Line began providing service to the Fair Park area of Dallas, electric trolleys provided Dallas residents an easy and affordable way to get to the State Fair of Texas. This 1953 video shows trolleys operating on the 12-Second line. This line ran from downtown Dallas through Deep Ellum on Main to Exposition, then past Fair Park in the same path the Green Line travels. It then turned south on old Second Avenue to Hatcher Street, roughly parallel to the Green Line right of way. At one time, there were four sets of tracks in front of the fairgrounds where DART's Fair Park Station is now located, and they were all utilized during the State Fair and for the Cotton Bowl. Thanks to Johnnie J. Myers for this film.
