Michele Wong Krause is proud to serve as a City of Dallas appointee to the DART Board of Directors.
As DART Board Chair from 2021-2023, Michele helped lead the agency as it emerged from the coronavirus pandemic, launched its new bus network, and expanded the GoLink on-demand microtransit service. Also, during her tenure, DART conducted a comprehensive fare payment study, advanced Silver Line Regional Rail construction, and began developing a new Strategic Plan. She recently shared her thoughts on her role as a DART Board member:
“We must build the case for DART with both hearts and minds. Not only do we explain how public transit positively impacts the lives of those who rely on transit to get to jobs and other destinations, but we also need to make the business case for public transit. We must emphasize how DART helps to create jobs, attract development, and generate taxes. It is important that we continue to communicate with our member cities to help them reach their long-term economic and public transit goals that benefit their communities.”
One of the reasons Michele feels called to public service to give back to her communities is the social assistance she received during her youth. She knows firsthand the importance of having reliable, affordable transportation and the tradeoffs that many families make between travel and other expenses. Michele said:
“As a person of both Hispanic and Asian heritage, I also try to be a voice for both those communities on the DART Board. We cannot talk about diversity without being diverse. Public transit must serve all our communities effectively.”
She has been a champion of communication and collaboration with an understanding of the need to communicate with our riders in more than one language.
Michele is also the current Chair of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Board of Directors, and the first APTA chair of Asian descent. She has served on APTA’s Board of Directors since 2017 and had served in numerous APTA leadership positions. On her APTA work, she says:
“I am very proud of my involvement in APTA’s successful advocacy toward the passage of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which makes historic investments to public transit. I also helped establish APTA’s Bus Manufacturing Task Force that was formed to address challenges in the bus manufacturing market. As a transit industry, we have had a sharp decrease in the number of U.S. bus manufacturers, which results in longer manufacturing times for vehicles and repair parts. A healthy, competitive market is good for public transportation. The task force’s recommendations have gained support from the Federal Transit Administration.”
A seasoned attorney and former associate municipal judge, Michele is currently in private law practice with the Wong Krause Law Firm in Dallas.
Michele presently serves on the board of directors for the McKinney Avenue Transit Authority and in the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association. She is a former member of the North Central Texas Council of Governments’ Regional Transportation Council and has served in various leadership positions in the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas, and the Dallas Bar Association.
Thank you, Michele, for being a dedicated public servant who advocates for our riders and the communities we serve, and for spotlighting DART at the national level as the APTA Chair.
