On Dec. 31, 2023, DART lost one of its greatest champions, retired U.S. Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson. Through her efforts as one of the agency’s biggest advocates, she helped DART obtain the federal funding it needed to make the DART System what it is today.

As some of you know, she helped DART win its largest award ever in 2006 – a landmark $700 million Full Funding Grant Agreement from the Federal Transit Administration to help fund the Green Line. At the time, the Green Line Phase 2, with 24 miles and 15 stations, was the longest single day opening of electric light rail in the United States since 1990. The new line brought rail service to the southeast Dallas community of Pleasant Grove and the northwest cities of Farmers Branch and Carrollton and set the stage for the Orange Line to Irving and DFW Airport.

In September 2011, DART unveiled a special commemorative plaque at the Green Line’s Hatcher Station to honor Johnson for her years of public support for the agency.

Then in April 2019, the City of Dallas voted to rename the physical property of Union Station to Eddie Bernice Johnson Union Station. Likewise, the DART Board voted to rename our DART Rail and TRE station to be Eddie Bernice Johnson Union Station, or EBJ Union Station as we commonly call it.

At the DART 40th Anniversary celebration, held on August 16, 2023, the agency presented Congresswoman Johnson with the first annual DART Legacy Award for her leadership and support of DART and public transportation initiatives throughout the country. We feel so fortunate that she was able to attend the ceremony in person.

DART Board Chair Slagel had the honor of representing DART at Congresswoman Johnson’s memorial. He spoke about her impact as both a Texas state representative and as a Dallas area congresswoman. Not enough can be said about the legacy she left on Dallas, and especially DART.
