Kind of a rainy weekend in store – at first, anyway. The weatherman says the wet stuff should stop falling sometime on Saturday, and Sunday promises to be beautiful. DART gets you to some cool events and exhibits both indoors and out, plus a special birthday concert from Dallas’ favorite local-girl-done-good.

Friday, Feb. 23

It’s your last day to celebrate Engineers Week at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. Build stuff, break it down and get creative. You can explore the field of engineering firsthand through interactive demonstrations and experiments with professional engineers and educators. The whole thing comes with the price of admission, so check out the Perot Museum’s awesome exhibits while you’re there! It’s located about a half-mile walk from Akard Station.

What’s left to say about Erykah Badu? Queen of neo-soul, bona fide eccentric, local treasure, influential artist of international stature – the native Dallasite is all of these, and tonight she brings her wide-ranging talent and riveting performance skills to the Bomb Factory. It’s only a few days from the Grammy-winner’s birthday, so this concert – billed as “Bless You Bruja! Another Badu Birthday” -- should be one for the books. The Bomb Factory is a short walk from Baylor University Medical Station.

Saturday, Feb. 24

It’s that time of year again! Dallas Blooms, the annual festival at the Dallas Arboretum, kicks off today with the theme "A World of Flowers." There will be hundreds of spring florals from around the world, and a variety of events happening throughout the coming weeks. At least some forecasts are calling for the rain to break today – if so, the colors should be especially effusive. The theme of the first week is “France.” Polish up on that high school French, don your figurative beret, and hop on Bus Route 60 – it will deliver you right to the front gate at Garland Road and Lakeland Drive.

Sunday, Feb. 25

Want to learn the art of beautiful lettering by brushstroke? It’s a special skill, for sure, and Pipe & Palette Home Outfitters & Mixed Media Art Classes teaches you how. Their brush lettering workshop series features group demonstrations, one-on-one instruction and plenty of practice time. Find out all about brush lettering, how to do various types of letters and make impressive flourishes, and learn the skills involved in mixing colors. At the end of the two-and-a-half-hour session, you’ll walk away with a workbook, practice sheets and numerous brush pens. Pipe & Palette is only a block and a half from Downtown Plano Station.
