North Texas Irish Festival

Festival season kicks off with DARTable Irish and Texas-themed events. Elsewhere, there is theater, comedy and basketball. Read on the see where DART can take you.

Friday, Feb. 28-Sunday, March 2

North Texas Irish Festival has been going strong for more than 40 years. DART takes you right to the Emerald Isle – more or less – complete with harps, fiddles and dancers. Not to mention food vendors, beer and whiskey tastings, and storytellers. They all add up to “Irish,” and you’ll discover them at this beloved annual event. One of the largest Irish festivals in the U.S., the family-friendly event is known far and wide as a premier venue for traditional Celtic music. The festival features 10 stages of live music, Irish step dancing, chef demonstrations and more. The festival gets off to a festive start with the North Texas Irish Festival Fun Run. It all takes place at Fair Park, conveniently served by the Green Line’s Fair Park Station.

Hadestown intertwines two mythic tales – that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone – and takes the audience on a to the underworld. With beguiling melodies and a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers and singers, the Tony Award-winning play is a tour de force theatrical experience.  Catch it at the Music Hall at Fair Park. That’s a very short walk from Fair Park Station on the Green Line.

Josh Adams Meyers brings comedy and music together in a high-energy performance. The staff and the audience all become part of the show, and you never know when a full band will join him. Catch him all weekend at Dallas Comedy Club, walkable from the Green Line’s Baylor University Medical Center Station.

Song From The Uproar: The Lives and Deaths of Isabelle Eberhardt lets audiences step into the extraordinary world of Song from the Uproar, which follows a Swiss explorer who abandoned her European life to roam the Sahara as a Sufi mystic. Through a mesmerizing blend of live instruments and electronics, this chamber opera captures her quest for and radical transformation. Experience this unique evening of theater at Theatre Three, walkable from the M-Line Trolley.

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is a stage adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel. A tiny village is rocked by scandal when the wealthiest man in town is found dead shortly after the apparent suicide of his fiancée. See it at Richardson Theatre Centre, walkable from Arapaho Center Station on the Red Line; you can also catch bus route 238 from the station.

Saturday, March 1

TEXFest features craft beer, food, and local artists performing Texas music. You can ride on a mechanical bull, take a photo with a live Texas longhorn, or kick back and relax with an afternoon of two-stepping and lawn games. This year’s headliner is the Dan Johnson Band, joined by Tejano band Asalto and Americana singer-songwriter Timothy James. The Texas-sized fun happens in Downtown Carrollton, walkable from the Green Line’s Downtown Carrollton Station.

Girls Night: The Musical takes audiences on a journey into the lives of a group of female friends as they visit their past, celebrate their present, and look to the future on a wild and hilarious night out. Catch it at the Eisemann Center, right across the plaza from Galatyn Park Station on the Red Line.

The Dallas Mavericks as take on the Milwaukee Bucks. Cheer them on at the American Airlines Center, served by Victory Station on the Green and Orange lines. You can also take the Trinity Railway Express (TRE).

Lektrik: A Festival of Lights is an enchanting, illuminated trail at Texas Discovery Gardens. More than 100 light sculptures blend botanical beauty with fairy-tale magic, plus depictions of the ancient Mayan, Aztec, and Egyptian cultures. There are also interactive photo ops, live performances, food and more. You can experience it through March 23. The gardens are easily accessible by Fair Park Station on the Green Line.
