The National Park Service has added the Garland Downtown Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places, the official list of the Nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. According to a city news release, the commercial district is the second historic area in Garland to be listed on the National Register, following the Travis College Hill neighborhood, which was listed in February. The historic district reflects the evolution of the city from a small rural town on along two main railroad lines, into a thriving commercial center along the Bankhead Highway, and later into a booming suburb of Dallas along U.S. 67. Today, the Blue Line runs along the right-of-way once occupied by the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) railroad. Just as passenger rail was essential to the city’s early growth, DART Light Rail has been key to the revitalization of Downtown Garland. Rockin’ the Square: A Historic Block Party Garland will celebrate its downtown’s listing on the National Register with live music, food and fireworks on Saturday, Oct. 21, 6-10 p.m. To kick off the festivities, party band The Mullet Boyz will rock the house. The evening will also feature the official unveiling of the National Register plaque. A celebratory display of fireworks will cap-off the plaque unveiling. Take the Blue Line to Downtown Garland Station, and walk a couple blocks to the city’s historic square.
