In the write-up, Assistant Editor Joe Petrie looks at the adoption of mobile ticketing applications for fare collection companies and transit agencies. He highlights two of the newest efforts - DART's GoPass app from Unwire
and Portland's Mobile Ticketing app from GlobeSherpa
The benefits of mobile ticketing are two-fold:
Kim Green, president of SPX Genfare, said unlike traditional fare media, riders purchase the majority of the equipment as opposed to the transit agency and with a Pew Research Center showing 91 percent of adults have cell phones, it shows a deep market penetration.
DART and Portland's TriMet launched mobile ticketing apps in September to positive reviews and successful sales and downloads. The response to GoPass has been so successful the app has had more than 72,000 downloads, far exceeding the initial year-end goal of 50,000.
