Meet FACP 2023 Basically Beethoven Festival Rising Stars

Each concert in Fine Arts Chamber Players’ Basically Beethoven Festival begins with a Rising Star Recital spotlighting local, gifted young musicians, many of whom are winners of area music contests and concerto competitions; followed by the Feature Performance showcasing professional musicians from across the Metroplex.

Yolutra Trio - Steven Lu, Danielle Yoon, Ella Tran FACPOn Sunday, July 9th, 2:30pm, at Moody Performance Hall, Rising Stars Yolutra Trio will perform Brahms and Arno Babadjanian. Yolutra Trio is Ella Tran, Steven Lu, and Danielle Yoon.

Ella Tran began taking piano lessons at the age of 5 and has been a student of Mrs. Marcy McDonald and Dr. Alex McDonald for ten years. She consistently received top prizes at the Dallas Symphonic Festival, the Dallas Piano Solo Competition, Baylor/Waco Piano Competition, and the Texas Music Teachers Association state-level division. In 2023, Ella won first place at the Juanita Miller Concerto Competition. Ella won the grand prize at the Collin County Young Artist Competition in 2022 and had the opportunity to perform with the Plano Symphony Orchestra. In 2020, she had the privilege of performing the Beethoven Triple Concerto with the Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra. Equally as comfortable as a chamber musician, Ella was featured as a Rising Star in the 2019 and 2022 Basically Beethoven Festival at the Moody Performance Hall.

Ella Tran - Rising StarElla also played the violin in her school symphony orchestra and was selected to perform in the TMEA All-State orchestra in 2021, 2022, and 2023. This year, she graduated from the STEM Academy at Martin High School and plans to study piano performance in college. “For many years, the Basically Beethoven Festival has been providing free, family-friendly concerts to the public,” Ella said. “It is a privilege for me to take part in the BBF and support the Fine Arts Chamber Players’ mission to bring classical music closer to the community.”

On Sunday, July 16th, 2:30pm, at Moody Performance Hall, Melody Guo (piano) will join fellow Rising Stars Maanas Varma (viola) and Nicole Johnson playing Mozart’s Kegelstatt Trio.

Melody GuoMelody Guo was born in Windsor, Canada, and she is currently a sophomore at the Townview School for the Talented and Gifted in Dallas. She began playing the piano when she was 5 and has studied with Dr. Alex Mcdonald for the past two years. Melody has won several awards at the Dallas solo competition as well as the Dallas Symphonic Festival, placing first in the junior concerto division in 2023. In 2022, she placed 3rd at the Texas Music Teachers Association State

competition, 1st at the Texas A&M Commerce Sonata Competition, and 3rd in the duet competition at the Indiana University Piano Academy. In 2023, she received 2nd place at the Juanita Miller Competition for TASO and the grand prize of the Collin County Young Artists Competition, performing with the Plano Symphony in March.

In addition to piano, Melody also enjoys playing the violin, drawing, and volunteering. She has been playing the violin for around 10 years and has played in the regional orchestras since 2018.

“I'm very grateful for this opportunity to play alongside these talented musicians,” Melody said. “And I hope to make some wonderful memories with them!”

Nicole Johnson - FACP Rising Star (1)Nicole Johnson will be a senior at Liberty high school in Frisco in the fall. She has been playing the clarinet for 6 years and studied under Sasha Blankenship and has been studying with Deb Fabian for the past 4 years. In addition to clarinet, she’s been playing the violin since she was 3 years old.

Nicole has been in the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra for 9 years, including 8 years on violin and going into her second year on clarinet. She qualified for 5A all state band in 9th and 11th grade (1st chair) on clarinet and all state orchestra in 10th grade on violin. In 2023, she won the Collin County Young Artists Competition and performed with the Plano Symphony in March.

Nicole comes from a musical family. Her parents are professional musicians and her sister is a music education major in college. Outside of music, Nicole enjoys baking, reading, and spending time with her family and friends.

Additional designated funds and operational funds are thanks to The Arts Community Alliance (TACA), Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) and The City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture, as well as numerous gifts from our individual patrons and collaboration from community partners including DART. FACP relies solely on grants and donations for its funding, as its mission is to provide absolutely free concerts and music education for all.
